Only two months into the Trump presidency’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, rumors are rife that Elon Musk’s tenure as headman may soon come to an end. Trump has hinted that the billionaire entrepreneur may soon be out of office and back to his full-time commitments at Tesla, SpaceX, and other enterprises.

Trump drops a big hint

While signing the executive order concerning concert ticket resellers in the Oval Office, President Trump praises Musk and hints that his time at DOGE is running out. “I think he’s amazing, but I also think he’s got a big company to run, and at some point he’s going to be going back,” Trump said, as reported by Politico. “He wants to. I’d keep him as long as I could keep him.”

This was preceded by Musk’s own admission that he would probably be out of DOGE by the end of May. This isinterestingly, when his 130-day appointment as a “special government employee” comes to an end.

Is the end of DOGE coming?

DOGE has been a fireball of controversy since its inception. Protests erupted over its extreme spendthrift policies that resulted in massive layoffs within the federal government. With the Tesla CEO in the driver’s seat, DOGE has largely been a tool used to rally for a smaller government and reduced federal spending.

Public dissatisfaction mounted as Tesla shares crumbled under the turmoil. Oh, and his business facilities here in the U.S. and elsewhere have been attacked with violence, arson, and other disruptive acts. With forgiveness to Musk, such distractions never surely help; this has raised serious questions about the divided focus permitted him by the mustering of the show.

Dems and critics frown on the whole deal

Musk’s management of DOGE received stormy criticism from Democrats as well as civil servants. His critics contend that his companies, in particular, are both Tesla and SpaceX, for which, for instance, billions of dollars in government contracts are in place, are affected by and will arguably benefit from the very policies they are pushing through DOGE.

The matter of mass termination of government employees has invoked a lot of criticism, arguing on the long-term effects of such radical cuts. Trump continues to throw his weight behind Musk, saying he is “a very talented guy” while praising his efforts to straighten up government agencies.

Musk to step down in may

He has caused all that through DOGE, such as cutting the federal workforce and reducing the deficit. In his most recent interview with Fox News, he was quoted as saying that “I think we will have accomplished most of the work required to reduce the deficit by a trillion dollars within that timeframe.”

Once Musk leaves, Trump said, the Cabinet secretaries will implement the remaining cost-cutting measures. By the 4th of July 2026, DOGE itself will be celebrating its dissolution. That date will correspond to the 250th Independence Day celebration in the country.

The Legacy of DOGE and Musk’s Role Among the Top Two Figures of Trump’s Administration. Musk has been one of the most visible figures of Trump’s administration, second only to the president himself. From attending Cabinet meetings to using his social media platform, X, to promote White House policies, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the administration’s agenda.

While Musk’s exit seems imminent, the influence of DOGE will likely persist, as will Trump’s administration’s argument for a leaner federal government. Over the years, his influence at DOGE will be debated, but one thing is certain: he has left an indelible mark on Washington during his term.
