Karoline Leavitt has recently made headlines as she became the youngest White House press secretary in U.S. history at the age of 27. Appointed by President-elect Donald Trump for his upcoming administration, Leavitt’s selection marks a significant moment in both her career and the landscape of political communications.

Early life and education

Born on August 24, 1997, in Atkinson, New Hampshire, Leavitt was brought up by a family that owned an ice cream parlor and a used truck dealership. She graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, then attended Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. At Saint Anselm, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in communications and political science, complemented during her time there playing softball for NCAA Division II.

It was during college that she began breaking her way into political communications with internships. Most notably, she interned in the Trump White House press office and at Fox News-things that would later mold her career path into media relations and public communications.

Career path

Leavitt applied to work quite seriously, joining the Trump administration right after graduation, in 2019, first as a speechwriter for the President and then as an assistant press secretary under Kayleigh McEnany. She prepared for some very pivotal briefings in this role and pushed back against what she considered discriminatory media coverage.

When Trump’s presidency ended in January 2021, Leavitt continued to pad her resume. She became communications director for Republican Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, whom Trump has since nominated to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. In 2022, Leavitt ran for Congress in New Hampshire’s 1st district. Though she won the Republican primary, she lost to incumbent Democrat Chris Pappas.

After her Congress election bid, Leavitt went back to work with the Trump team to become national press secretary for his 2024 presidential campaign and transition efforts. Her work from this period forward further solidified her reputation as an accomplished communicator within the Trump inner circle.

Historic appointment

The most striking appointment was that of Leavitt, who broke the record set by Ron Ziegler as White House press secretary to President Nixon when he was 29 years old in 1969. Trump stated belief in her capabilities and referred to her thus: “smart,” “tough,” and a “highly effective communicator.” Further, he said, she would be key in getting their message across to the American people as they try to work their way toward their “Make America Great Again” agenda.

Leavitt said in a social media post that her appointment to serve again in the Trump administration was an “incredible honor.” Having worked in various capacities in the past, she is quite prepared for an assignment of this profile for which communication strategies will be of essence.

Expectations and challenges ahead

The job description too often includes fiery exchanges with reporters over sticky issues dogging the administration at any particular time. Former press secretaries who served under Trump also approached their duties differently, and a few were known for hostile sparring with the media.

Against this background, if the appointment of Leavitt is any indication, it is only further continuity of the trend of vigorous defense against perceived media bias while touting the policies and programs of the administration. Her experience during the first term of Trump and work on recent campaigns prepared her with a skill set that may serve her well in managing communications from one of American politics’ most scrutinized positions.
