If you’re getting SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits in either Kentucky or New Mexico, you may be seeing a little more help this month. Both states have raised benefits for June 2025 to help people who are recovering from natural disasters or who have serious health needs. The changes are temporary but could be a big help, particularly if you qualify. Here’s what’s happening and how to know if you’re eligible.
Kentucky: More help for storm-affected counties
In Kentucky, the state is responding to deadly storms that swept through in May, killing at least 20 people and causing widespread destruction. If you live in one of the 26 counties affected by the severe weather, you may be eligible for additional food benefits through the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP).
What’s new: SNAP regulations have been temporarily modified to allow you to buy hot, prepared meals from participating stores. So if your home was damaged or you’re without power, you won’t be limited to cold or packaged food—you can purchase meals that are ready to eat.
Deadline: This special accommodation is available only through July 2, 2025.
Approved counties include:
Adair, Caldwell, Calloway, Casey, Christian, Clay, Clinton, Crittenden, Cumberland, Henderson, Hopkins, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Lincoln, Lyon, Marshall, McCreary, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell, Trigg, Union, Wayne, Webster, and Whitley.
This temporary policy allows families to access food on time after recovery. According to the USDA, the purpose is to “facilitate access to food after power outages.”
New Mexico: $68 one-time payment for older adults with disabilities
If you’re a New Mexico SNAP recipient, there’s a second form of relief—but only for a specific group. On June 3, the state issued a one-time $68 payment to more than 29,000 individuals. You didn’t need to apply—if you’re over 60 and have a disability, the funds should’ve been automatically loaded onto your EBT card.
This benefit was funded by the state and administered by the Health Care Authority (HCA) and the Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD). They want to help seniors and disabled individuals maintain food security during economically difficult times.
Need help or have questions? You can call the HCA at 1-800-283-4465.
ALTSD cabinet secretary Emily Kaltenbach said the payment “demonstrates our commitment to making sure New Mexicans have access to the healthy food they need.”
Bottom line: Act before July 2
No matter if you live in Kentucky or New Mexico, these extra benefits do not last forever. If you are one of Kentucky’s 26 affected counties, be sure to use the hot meal option by July 2. If you’re in New Mexico and qualify, check your EBT balance to be sure you received the $68.
These are modest yet significant measures aimed at helping those who need it most—don’t let your opportunity to gain slip away.
