Helping families put food on the table

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the United States’ biggest federal food assistance program. In Texas, it is the state-operated SNAP that helps low-income households, elderly people, veterans, and people with disabilities to pay for grocery bills each month.

SNAP is not a loan. It’s a subsidy for income- and asset-qualifying families. Benefits are loaded onto an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used as a debit card to buy groceries at grocery stores and farmers’ markets. To millions of Texans, the program is a lifeline to the purchase of basic items and healthy food.

Who is eligible for SNAP in Texas?

Eligibility for SNAP in Texas depends on your income and family size. The bigger the family, the higher the income limit. Here are the maximum monthly income levels for households in 2025:

  • 1 person: $2,152
  • 2 people: $2,909
  • 3 people: $3,665
  • 4 people: $4,421
  • 5 people: $5,177
  • 6 people: $5,934
  • 7 people: $6,690
  • 8 people: $7,446
  • For each additional person, add $757.

This is to mean that even employed families with incomes below such levels will be qualified. Seniors, unemployed workers, and veterans could be qualified as well if their income and resources are within given guidelines.

How much do families receive?

The actual cash value of money that can be received by a family is determined by income, household size, and expenses like rent or child care. While SNAP does not cover all food expenses, it lowers the cost and ensures families have access to food.

For example, a very small family with little income might be allocated enough each month to allow them to procure most essential grocery staples, and a larger family would be allotted more to balance out their size.

Deposits will typically appear on your EBT card at midnight, but sometimes there are brief delays.

Why your payment might be late

Most Texans receive their SNAP benefits on schedule, but there are a few reasons why a deposit might be late:

  • Recertification not complete – Deposits will be halted if your case is eligible to renew and paperwork is insufficient.
  • County office delays – Some offices will experience processing issues.
  • Technical malfunctioning – The EBT system will be slower in making payments on certain days.
  • Outdated information – Old contact information or unreported changes will cause confusion.

If you do not receive your benefits on or before the afternoon of the day of your appointment, the best course is to call your local SNAP office for help.
