A gas station chain that many of you have probably stopped at over the years is saying goodbye to the name it has used for over five decades. Kum & Go, known for its catchy name and bright red signage, is officially rebranding. And yes, the change is permanent.
If you are a longtime Kum & Go customer, this may come as a surprise—or even a little sad. Here is everything you need to know.
Why is Kum & Go changing its name?
This major name change comes after Kum & Go was bought by Maverik, a Utah-based convenience store chain, in April 2023. Even though the acquisition happened over a year ago, the official rebrand is just now starting to roll out.
According to an email sent to Kum & Go rewards members on July 15, the rebranding process has begun in Iowa and will eventually move across all 400-plus locations in the U.S.
The new name across all stores will be Maverik, as the company is aiming to create a unified brand.
What will happen to Kum & Go stores?
One of the biggest questions you might have is whether anything else will change besides the name. The company says no, and that the same service and staff you are used to will still be there.
Maverik released a statement saying they are working to create a consistent experience for all customers. According to the company:
“We are taking a thoughtful, market-by-market approach to ensure the best customer experience before confirming each state’s rebrand.”
So for now, if your local Kum & Go has not been renamed yet, it probably will be soon.
When will the name change happen in my state?
Right now, Maverik has not given a full timeline for when each state will see the rebrand. But local media outlets have started to piece things together.
In Oklahoma City, for example, most Kum & Go locations are expected to become Maverik stores by mid-2025. In Iowa, the process has already started. The rest of the country will likely follow in a phased approach.
So if you are in a state where Kum & Go has a big presence, do not be surprised when the sign changes over the next year or so.
How are customers reacting to the change?
As you can imagine, many people are not thrilled. Kum & Go has been around since the 1960s, and for a lot of folks, it feels like a piece of local history is being erased.
Some loyal fans are calling it the “end of an era.” Others say they will miss the name because it was “fun and memorable.” But some customers are taking a wait-and-see approach, hoping that service and quality stay the same.
It is clear that even though the new name is coming, not everyone is ready to let go of the old one.
Who owns Kum & Go now?
Kum & Go was previously owned by the Krause Group, which also sold Solar Transport as part of the deal. That is a fuel transport and logistics company also tied to the Krause family.
When the deal was announced, Krause Group CEO Kyle Krause said:
“Kum & Go has always been driven by a desire to innovate, grow and serve our customers, our communities and our people.”
Maverik President Chuck Maggelet added:
“We are honored to carry the Krause family’s legacy forward as we build on Kum & Go’s strong operating and innovation capabilities.”
So while the name is going away, both companies say the heart of the brand will remain.
