Some pressure cookers sold at ALDI are being pulled off the shelves because of a serious safety issue. If you bought an Ambiano pressure cooker from ALDI in recent years, you may want to stop using it right away.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall after reports of burn injuries linked to these products. Here is what you need to know.

Why are Aldi pressure cookers being recalled

The recall is happening because the lids on certain Ambiano pressure cookers can open while the cooker is still under pressure. When this happens, hot food and liquid can shoot out, which may lead to severe burns.

The CPSC said 11 people have already reported contents escaping from their cookers while still pressurized. Out of those reports, eight people suffered serious burn injuries.

So if you own one of these cookers, it is not just a small defect. It is a real safety concern that has already harmed others.

Which ambiano models are affected by the recall

Not every Ambiano pressure cooker is being recalled. Only certain models are affected. Here are the exact models included in the recall:

  • Model 93550 (KY-318B)
  • Model 96775 (KY-318A)
  • Model 98527 (6L-PC)

These pressure cookers were sold in both six-quart and eight-quart sizes.

How many pressure cookers are part of the recall

According to the CPSC, about 46,000 pressure cookers are being recalled across the United States.

These products were sold at ALDI stores nationwide from January 2016 through December 2019. They were sold for around $40 each.

If you shopped at ALDI during those years and bought an Ambiano cooker, it is very important to check your model number.

What should you do if you have one of the recalled cookers

If you find that you own one of these models, here is what you need to do:

  • Stop using it immediately. Do not take the risk of another accident happening in your home.
  • Check your model number. The number should be printed on the rating label located on the cooker.
  • Contact ALDI. The company is offering a full refund for anyone who returns the recalled product.

You can reach out to ALDI’s customer service or visit their website to learn exactly how to return your cooker and get your refund.

What risks are linked to recalled pressure cookers

Pressure cookers work by building up steam inside a sealed pot to cook food faster. If that steam is released too quickly or the lid comes off before the pressure is gone, the hot contents can burst out.

The recalled Ambiano models can open too soon, which creates a dangerous situation. Burns from hot liquids can be very severe and often require medical treatment. That is why the recall is being taken so seriously.

How to stay safe with kitchen appliances

This recall is also a reminder for all of us to be careful with appliances that use high heat or pressure. Here are a few safety tips you can follow in general:

  • Always read the instruction manual before using a new appliance.
  • Check for recalls on products you already own.
  • Never try to force open a pressure cooker lid if you are unsure whether the steam has been fully released.
  • Register your appliances with the manufacturer so you can be contacted quickly if a recall happens.
