One of Memphis’s favorite Goodwill stores has announced its closure, ending years of bargain hunting at the community’s beloved thrift store. Its closing is preceded by more than stocks discounted as much as 50% off merchandise, providing consumers with a last chance to snag bargains at the popular thrift store.

Location details and closure timeline

Goodwill Store & Donation Center at Austin Peay Highway in Memphis will close in weeks. The store will close on August 2.

Memphis Goodwill Inc. informed the news on Tuesday that the store is closing, citing that a storewide sale has been initiated. The customer can now avail 50% on the sale of the clearance, but only until the next week and a half, which will extend to July 26.

A Goodwill Inc. Memphis release stated:

“Dear valued shoppers & donors. It is with sincere appreciation that we thank you for your years of support at our Austin Peay Store and Donation Center.”

“Your donations have changed lives in our community. As we get set to close this store on August 2nd, shop storewide 50% off, now through July 26th.”

“This sale does not include New Goods.”

The announcement of closure provides consumers with the chance to grab profound markdowns in the last weeks the business operates. Sales during closure usually take place whenever a store is shutting down because businesses seek to clear out merchandise before they close operations for good.

Impact on the community

Memphis Goodwill has been a fixture in the local community for years, not just as a bargain shopping source, but also as a source of employment. With more than 40 locations in Memphis and North Mississippi, the organization is a retailing staple of the region. Closing each location not only takes away a shopping outlet, but also possibly affects employment within the regional area and services of communities.

The Memphis Goodwill organization has continually generated jobs directly and indirectly with their sale operations. Upon the opening of the Union Avenue branch in 2019, it generated 38 jobs and was also expected to service 67,000 sale transactions as well as 30,000 visits by donors within its inaugural year. Store closure necessarily impacts these employment numbers and makes donations less accessible to members in a community.

Bargain hunting opportunities

The 50% off tag sale is bargain shopper heaven for discount enthusiasts and Goodwill customers alike. Memphis Goodwill stores most often have weekly tag sales with 50% off of a certain color of tags, but store-wide tag sales of this scale are rare. Customers can look forward to discount-priced clothing, kitchenware, electronics, and furniture during the last sale period.

The timing of such sales is also important for value-for-money shoppers. Closing-down sales usually begin with modest reductions and build up as the closing date looms, the deepest reductions usually near the end of trading.

Alternative shopping locations

While one store closes, Memphis Goodwill has many other stores still open throughout the region. The company has locations on Union Avenue, Stage Road, and other locations both within and around Memphis proper and the regional suburbs. Memphis Goodwill has been growing too in recent years, most notably with the 2021 move of their Collierville store to a larger facility at Carriage Crossing MarketPlace.

For recurring donors and customers, the website of the organization has current information on locations, time, and drop-off sites for donations. The organization also has The Excel Center, which is a tuition-free high school for adults, showing their ongoing concern with workforce development and education in the community.
