If you own BowFlex adjustable dumbbells for your home gym, you need to leave everything and check them immediately. More than 3 million sets of the weights are being recalled after more than 100 people were injured using them. Here’s what you need to know — and do now.

Why the recall was necessary

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a national recall after receiving hundreds of complaints that the weight plates loosen or fall off during use. That’s not only frustrating — it’s dangerous.

Up to the moment, over 100 have been injured. The reported injuries include concussions, broken toes, bruising, and scrapes. Whether you’re a committed lifter or lifting just to stay in shape, these weights can be harmful to your well-being.

What products are affected?

Two top-selling models are recalled:

  •  BowFlex Model 552 – Adjustable between 5 and 52.5 lbs
  •  BowFlex Model 1090 – Adjustable between 10 and 90 lbs

Both dumbbells are black and are sold individually or in a pair, as well as with molded plastic trays. Hand-adjustable through knobs, they’re adjusted with the dumbbells placed within their base.

You likely bought yours at the following:

  •  Johnson Fitness & Wellness
  •  DICK’S Sporting Goods
  •  Best Buy
  •  Bowflex.com
  •  Amazon.com

How to check your dumbbells

See the bottom of your dumbbell’s plastic tray — there lies the model and serial number on a sticker. Compare that number to the affected ranges.

The following are just some of the serial number ranges covered:

  •  Model 552: 00182M243902233 – 00182M243902592, and many more.
  •  Model 1090: 4551MAG21452813 – 4551MAG23350381, and others.

If your dumbbells fall within the listed ranges, they’re part of the recall — and you should stop using them immediately.

What to do next

Don’t just set the weights aside and forget about them. BowFlex’s parent company, Johnson Health Tech Trading, would like you to contact them for a refund or a replacement. You can reach them on their website or by dialing their customer service.

This isn’t something to dawdle about — continued use of these clunky dumbbells could cause serious harm. And with over 100 reported incidents, it’s clear that this isn’t an accident.

Your safety is important

Your home gym is where you’re supposed to get stronger and healthier, not hurt and injured. If you have BowFlex adjustable dumbbells, sit down for a minute today and check them over. It could just prevent you from injuring yourself and making an emergency room visit.
