Crack the code, win big! Chipotle is welcoming back its digital classic, Burrito Vault, giving millions of Americans a chance to win free food. The fast-casual chain will celebrate National Burrito Day by awarding more than 150,000 BOGO free entree codes to some lucky winners on April 3.

Burrito vault game instructions

The Burrito Vault game will open for Chipotle Rewards members in the U.S. and Canada beginning at 9 A.M. ET on Monday, March 31, at UnlockBurritoDay.com. Players are allowed to guess the burrito order combination one ingredient at a time. According to Chipotle, the first 2,500 players who crack the code within any given hour will receive a BOGO code.

Those players who try to unlock the vault after the codes have been claimed will still get rewarded with 25 points on their Chipotle Rewards account for seeing it through so that nearly everyone will get something.

This will be Chipotle’s biggest digital promotion yet

“Last year, our Burrito Vault drove unprecedented fan engagement that resulted in our highest digital transaction day of all time,” said Chief Brand Officer Chris Brandt. “Now, we are giving them another chance to crack the code and score more free burritos.”

In 2024, the game was played over 2 million times, and prizes were claimed in less than 20 minutes. To ensure more fans are allowed to win this time, Chipotle has changed the winning code every hour, sprinkling the prize drops throughout the length of the event.

Why is Chipotle doing this promotion?

Chipotle has typically been at the forefront of digital marketing in offering promotions and interactive campaigns that drive customer engagement. The Burrito Vault game fits into the company strategy of increasing online and mobile orders while rewarding loyal customers.

The game is made available to Chipotle Rewards members only, encouraging more users into its loyalty program of added benefits such as free food and exclusive deals. Chipotle is leveraging its online platforms to hold the competitive edge in fast-casual dining as more and more customers go digital with orders.

Debunking the Chipotle bankruptcy rumors

However, when the buzz came out on the Burrito Vault game, rumors were flying around stating that Chipotle was closing locations in 2025 and filing for bankruptcy. These rumors were circulated on social media, and they are completely false.

The uproar seems to have been triggered when Spanish media outlet Unión Rayo released a report on the closing of Farmesa Fresh Eatery, one of Chipotle’s small-scale restaurant concepts tested in 2023. The piece was originally accompanied by the promotional image with the logo of Chipotle, which probably raised speculation that the chain itself was shutting it down.

Chipotle put up a bout of rumors with an explanation given to Erin Wolford, the Chipotle spokesperson. She explained that the false story arose from an incorrect publication, which wrongly implied that Chipotle was involved with its now-defunct Farmesa venture. The company has since opened up to Unión Rayo for clarification and received an apology for the misleading report.

Chipotle fans can still enjoy their favorite Burritos

Chipotle remains healthy in this: no location will be closed or bankruptcy declared. The company has plans for ever-greater expansion, including new offerings on menus and more interactive promotions like the Burrito Vault to keep fans busy.

The best course of action for getting free burritos will be to “prepiper” when the game launches on March 31: Hourly chances and prizes distributed more equitably mean that Chipotle is making it easier than ever for loyal National Burrito Day fans to score a mouth-watering deal.
