If you recently purchased free-range or cage-free eggs in California or Nevada, you should be cautious. Lucerne Valley, California-based Country Eggs, LLC, has put out a recall of its large brown cage-free Sunshine Yolks eggs following a Salmonella outbreak. The recall includes multiple brands and sell-by dates, and health officials are urging consumers who purchased the eggs to do so quickly.

What’s happening?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the recall after it found a connection between Country Eggs products and at least 92 cases of Salmonella illness reported.

The recall involves eggs sold under several brands, including Nagatoshi Produce, Mizuho, and Nijiya Markets, in California and Nevada’s 12 counties.

Which products are recalled?

Recalled products are Sunshine Yolks eggs, which are large and sell-by dates from July 1, 2025, through September 16, 2025. All recalled cartons bear a printed code: No. CA 7695.

It should be noted here that the recall also covers the company’s liquid egg products, which have been possibly distributed across the country. If you have them, return them for a refund or dispose of them.

Why the recall occurred

The FDA reported that investigations revealed a risk of contamination where the eggs may contain Salmonella bacteria. Country Eggs and the FDA are investigating the source of the contamination, so production has stopped.

Salmonella contamination is something to worry about since it provides a simple means of transmission in case eggs are broken or handled carelessly. One contaminated egg can pose a health threat when consumed raw or undercooked.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning

In case you or your family member has eaten these eggs in the not-too-distant past, you should watch out for symptoms of salmonella poisoning. These can include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fever

Symptoms typically develop anywhere from a few hours to seven days after consuming contaminated food. Healthy adults will usually recover without treatment, but young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill and are sometimes killed by Salmonella.

Please contact a healthcare professional promptly if you experience a serious illness or one that persists longer than anticipated after consuming eggs.

What consumers should do

If you purchased Country Eggs Sunshine Yolks with the affected sell-by dates and code, follow these steps:

Do not eat the eggs or liquid items.

Return the items to where they were purchased for a refund.

Dispose of any eggs that cannot be returned properly.

By doing these, you are preventing further illness and removing potentially tainted products from circulation.

The bigger picture

Salmonella egg contamination is not new. Health agencies emphasise proper food preparation and cooking practices, especially regarding the consumption of raw or undercooked eggs. Keep eggs in the refrigerator, cook them thoroughly, and don’t consume raw egg products.

Country Eggs is working with the FDA to locate the source of the contamination and has halted production until the root of the issue is identified and addressed. The hope is that the recall will prevent other illnesses in California, Nevada, and other states where liquid egg products were shipped from occurring. Stay Safe

If you’re shopping for eggs, it’s a beneficial idea to check the carton for brand, sell-by date, and code before bringing them home. Even if your eggs don’t match the recalled batch, practising safe food handling is key to preventing Salmonella infections.

Remember that, while the outbreak has been worrisome, speedy action—returning or discarding contaminated eggs and observing for signs of symptoms—can benefit you and your family. Being vigilant and careful is the best way to enjoy eggs safely, scrambled, boiled, or baked into your favourite recipe.

The Country Eggs recall serves as a reminder that even the safest-appearing, free-range, or cage-free foods can become dangerous when contaminated. If you reside in California or Nevada and bought Sunshine Yolks recently, inspect your cartons immediately to keep yourself and your family safe from potential Salmonella contamination.
