If you live in Oklahoma or Georgia and shop at Homeland or one of its sister stores, you may want to check if your local grocery store is on this list. Five locations across both states are officially set to shut down for good next month.
The closures, set for August 16, are part of a larger plan by Homeland Acquisition Corp. Inc. to focus on what they call “better opportunities” in other communities.
Why are these homeland stores closing?
The company behind Homeland, Homeland Acquisition Corp. Inc., made it clear that this move comes down to money and long-term growth. Christin King, the director of marketing and public relations for Homeland, told The Oklahoman that the decision was based on each store’s financial performance and long-term potential.
She said, “By closing these stores, we are able to focus on the greatest opportunities that strengthen other communities, grow communities and to really strengthen our organization by focusing resources in those areas.”
In simple terms, these stores were not doing well enough financially, and the company believes its time and money are better spent elsewhere.
Which homeland stores are closing?
These are the five stores set to shut down permanently on August 16:
- Homeland – 505 S Chickasaw St, Pauls Valley, OK 73075
- Homeland – 1629 S Main St, Jay, OK 74346
- United Supermarkets – 1215 S Main St, Kingfisher, OK 73750
- Discount Foods – 2405 N 14th St, Ponca City, OK 74601
- Piggly Wiggly – 123 N Main St, Gordon, GA 31031
If any of these are your go-to stores, you may want to start looking for an alternative nearby.
How many people will lose their jobs?
The closures are not just about stores disappearing. They are also affecting real people—employees who may soon be out of work.
- According to KOCO, an ABC affiliate in Oklahoma City, the shutdowns in Oklahoma alone could leave 85 employees without jobs.
- There is no official word yet on how many people will be impacted by the closure in Georgia.
It is always hard when jobs are on the line, and for the people working in these locations, it means starting over or transferring to another store if possible.
What stores are part of homeland?
You might be surprised to learn that Homeland is not the only name the company uses. In fact, they operate about 80 grocery stores under several different banners across the South. These include:
- Homeland
- Food World
- Piggly Wiggly
- Discount Foods
- CashSaver
- United Supermarkets
So even if your local Homeland store is closing, one of its sister stores might still be nearby.
What should you do if your store is closing?
If you are a regular shopper at any of the affected stores, here are a few simple things you can do to prepare:
- Plan ahead: Use the next few weeks to stock up on essentials if the store offers better deals.
- Look for alternatives: Check nearby locations of other stores operated by the same company.
- Watch for discounts: Stores that are closing often mark down items in the weeks leading up to the shutdown.
These closures are never easy—for customers or employees. But knowing ahead of time gives you a chance to make a smooth transition and avoid last-minute stress.
