Walmart fans have plenty to celebrate as the country’s largest retailer announces an ambitious growth plan, bringing 25 new stores to the country with a calculated emphasis on rapidly growing markets in California, Texas, and Florida.
The nation’s retail behemoth is investing heavily in American communities, asserts CEO John Furner, who highlighted the company’s goal of serving more customers across the country. “We are determined to bring our low prices and broad selection to more communities where we think we can make a difference,” Furner said.
Massive expansion strategy: Building for America’s future
Walmart’s 2025 expansion is the retailer’s most fevered store-opening campaign in years, its first new Supercenter construction in four years. It is one phase of an even larger five-year initiative unveiled in January 2024, where Walmart pledged to open or remodel more than 150 stores while at the same time remodeling 650 stores in 47 states and Puerto Rico.
The expansion strategy is an expression of Walmart’s “Store of the Future” vision that includes reconfigured floor space, new services, and innovative technology to engage customers in a more interactive store shopping experience. The new stores have heightened product presentations, digital shelf labels, QR codes for additional product details, and upgraded pharmacy areas with expanded aisles and private screening rooms.
“These projects are an investment of tens of millions of dollars in jobs, materials and tax base, which return to their respective community,” Furner said. “And they’ll assist us in reaching and serving even more shoppers.”
Texas leading the charge
Texas is getting the most new Walmart stores, with four already announced openings:
- Frisco, Texas: A new Supercenter will be the company’s fifth store in the rapidly growing Dallas suburb
- Melissa, Texas: A 200,000-square-foot Supercenter valued at $15 million, strategically positioned at 1950 McKinney Avenue, close to U.S. 75 and Highway 121
- Cypress, Texas: Open already in April 2025, this store is the flagship “Store of the Future” concept
- Celina, Texas: A brand new Supercenter will be constructed as part of Shawnee Trail Development close to Preston Road and Collin County Outer Loop
California expansion plans
Two major additions welcome California:
- Eastvale, California: New Supercenter with a 16-pump fueling center, at 14100 Limonite Ave
- Mountain View, California: Existing store remodeled to a complete Supercenter with expanded capabilities
Florida’s expanding presence
Customers in Florida will enjoy three new Neighborhood Market stores:
- Milton, Florida: 57,000-square-foot Neighborhood Market at 6275 US Highway 90, providing approximately 100 new jobs
- Pace, Florida: A Neighborhood Market of over 60,000 square feet at 4239 Berryhill Road, including an eight-pump fuel station
Other strategic sites
The expansion extends beyond these strategic states:
- Eagle Mountain, Utah: A 175,000-square-foot Supercenter on the corner of SR-73 and Spring Run Parkway, generating 300 new employment opportunities for this rapidly growing community
- Tuscaloosa, Alabama: A Neighborhood Market in planning since 2015, which finally opened at 8600 Highway 69
Learning about Walmart’s store formats
Walmart Supercenters are the company’s home-store format, measuring 178,000 square feet on average and a full hypermarket experience. They have full-service food departments with fresh produce, bakery, deli, and dairy, as well as general merchandise in the way of electronics, clothing, home decor, and auto services. Most have pharmacies, vision centers, gas stations, and restaurants.
Neighborhood Markets are Walmart’s smaller-size stores, between 28,000 square feet and 65,000 square feet, and with a concentration on food and daily necessities. The stores offer around 23,000 SKUs in contrast to the 200,000 products in Supercenters. Neighborhood Markets, although smaller in size, have the same price effectiveness as larger stores while offering greater convenience for shopping on the go.
Economic impact and job creation
Every new Walmart store is a large economic investment in a community. Supercenters produce around 300 new positions, and Neighborhood Markets have 90-95 associates. The expansion project will create thousands of jobs across different states, with the jobs providing competitive wages and benefits that involve tuition-free college education from their first day of employment.
The Eagle Mountain location alone will bring 300 new jobs to Utah County, while the Milton, Florida store will create 100 positions in Santa Rosa County. These employment opportunities come with what Walmart describes as “amazing perks,” including flexible scheduling, competitive paid time off, and comprehensive healthcare benefits.
