A huge recall sweeps the nation
DermaRite Industries, a New Jersey firm that manufactures everyday hygiene and over-the-counter medical products, just announced a massive recall. The problem? Some of their hand sanitizers, deodorants, soaps, and even antifungal creams may be contaminated with dangerous bacteria.
These products were shipped across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, as per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The company has already told its distributors and customers to stop using and discard them immediately.
Why the recall matters
The contamination is with a complex of bacteria called Burkholderia cepacia complex. As scary as that name would lead you to believe it belongs in a science lab, here’s the horrifying part: this bacteria can cause extremely serious infections.
For healthy individuals, it can cause localized skin infections, especially if you have cuts or scrapes.
In people with weak immune systems or pre-existing lung conditions (like cystic fibrosis), it can be fatal, making its way into the bloodstream and causing sepsis.
The FDA says that infection can add symptoms like fever, chills, and fatigue. For people who are already compromised by health problems, this is especially perilous.
A growing list of recalled products
This isn’t the first recall from DermaRite. Back in August, the company recalled certain soaps and cleansers. But now the list is much longer and includes:
- Hand sanitizers
- Antifungal creams
- External pain relief creams
- Skin protectants
- Cleansers and deodorants
The full list with expiration dates and product labels can be found directly on the FDA’s website. If you’ve bought personal care products recently, especially from medical supply shops or pharmacies, it’s worth checking.
What to do if you have these products
If you discover that you’ve purchased one of the recalled DermaRite products, the instructions are simple:
- Stop using it right away.
- Throw it away safely without giving or donating it.
If you’ve already used the product and notice symptoms like fever or unusual fatigue, contact your doctor immediately.
Consumers can also call them directly for more information. DermaRite has hired Sedgwick to coordinate the recall. You can call them at 888-943-5190 (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. EST) or email them at [email protected].
If you believe the product has done damage, you can also report it to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
Why lottery-sized recalls keep happening
This is not the first massive recall this year, and it will likely not be the last. When items are mass-manufactured and distributed nationally, a single problem with contamination can spread to millions of homes overnight. This is the reason recalls are so serious—they are about protecting everyday people from harm before issues are widespread. DermaRite’s case is yet another reminder to be on the lookout for recall announcements, especially if the item is one you put on your skin or use for medical care.
