A burger that stands out
Burgers are one of America’s go-to comfort foods. Most of us have had a lot of good burgers, but few that make us pause mid-chew and exclaim, “Wow, this is great.” That’s why Hyphy Burger, an Oakland newcomer, is causing so much buzz. Many are calling it possibly the best burger in the Bay Area—maybe the best they’ve ever had.
The history behind hyphy burger
Hyphy Burger was started by Darion Frazier, aka BayAreaFoodz, a food influencer who built a following by advocating for local cuisine. Like all food businesses endorsed by influencers that sound gimmicky, Frazier’s burger stand is focused on quality and community. He just wanted to bring Oakland something authentic, and he certainly poured his passion into the details.
You can’t help but notice Hyphy Burger if you take a stroll along Grand Avenue. The exterior is bright and bold, with words like “Hyphy” and “You Feel Me” written across the building and even on a parked minibus. It’s colorful, welcoming, and obviously Oakland.
Inside the restaurant
The vibe indoors is the same as outdoors—loose, fun, and upbeat. It’s like that spot you visit in your hood where you can just hang out, laugh raucously, and devour a burger without even bothering to worry about getting it all over your face. That’s part of what makes Hyphy Burger so great. It’s not schmancy fine dining or hipster simplicity; it’s good grub in a living atmosphere.
What’s on the menu
Hyphy Burger doesn’t mess around. There are only two choices:
- The Hyphy Burger: Two smashed up beef patties, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled onions, and their signature “You Feel Me” sauce.
- The Burnout Burger: Everything on the Hyphy Burger, but with the addition of jalapeños, pepperoncini, and pepper jack cheese for added heat.
Other than fries and milkshakes, there are no extras such as bacon or onion rings. It’s a concise menu, which tends to result in more care being taken over making the fundamentals excellent.
The famous shake
Besides burgers, Hyphy serves “Stunna” milkshakes. One of them is attached below—Cinnamon Toast Crunch milkshake. It has a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of cereal bits. It’s adored by everyone almost as much as the burgers. It’s sweet, thick, and fun — the kind of dessert to round out the meal.
The burger experience
When it’s served to you, don’t expect a fancy presentation. It’s in a takeout bag, and yes, it’s messy. But that’s the beauty of it. The ideal smash burger needs to be cheesy, juicy, and runny enough that you’ll be grabbing extra napkins.
The patties are seared with heavenly crispy edges, thanks to the Maillard reaction—that caramelized burn that turns beef into something so much more flavorful. Despite having the crispy edges, the meat is juicy inside. Each bite is cohesive: the beef, cheese, pickles, onions, and bun blend into one taste.
The majority who try it say they were surprised at how good it is. The burger does not fall apart, does not have “filler bites,” and is satisfying from start to finish.
Why it works
There is some of magic in the plainness. No fancy toppings or frills. The good, fresh flavors are prepared just right. Combined with the welcoming, neighborhood feel, it is an experience that is unique but not upscale.

The buzz and the future
Hyphy Burger already has a loyal fan base, with people lining up to taste it. There are even people who say it’s worth driving all the way from the other side of the Bay to Oakland just to eat this burger. With all the commotion, there have been discussions of expansion in the future. But fans think that the burger is best consumed in its original place, surrounded by the Oakland environment that gave it life.
