If you’re a frequent Kohl’s shopper in San Diego County, you’ll likely want to take a final trip this weekend. The national department store chain is closing a group of stores this weekend, and two of them are located in your community.
These Kohl’s stores are permanently closing
Kohl’s is closing 27 locations in the U.S. this weekend, of which 10 are in California. Two of those California closures are happening right here in San Diego County:
- Balboa (San Diego) – 5505 Balboa Ave.
- Encinitas – 134 N El Camino Real
Both stores are expected to have their final day of business on Saturday, March 29. If you’ve got gift cards to use or Kohl’s Cash lying around, this might be the time to cash in — before the doors shut for good.

Which other California stores are closing?
Along with the two San Diego locations, Kohl’s will also close these eight stores across the state:
- Fremont – 43782 Christy St.
- Mountain View – 350 Showers Dr.
- Napa – 1116 1st St.
- Pleasanton – 4525 Rosewood Dr.
- Point West (Sacramento) – 1896 Arden Way
- San Rafael – 5010 Northgate Dr.
- San Luis Obispo – 205 Madonna Rd.
- Westchester – 8739 S Sepulveda Blvd.
These stores are also expected to close on March 29.
Why is Kohl’s closing its stores?
You might wonder why these particular stores are shutting down. It all comes down to performance, says Kohl’s CEO Tom Kingsbury. In a previous announcement this year, he stated the company still believes in the “health and strength” of its profitable stores but opted to close underperforming stores in a decision that was “tough but necessary.”
It means stores that were not doing well — whether through traffic, sales, or demand in the marketplace — are being phased out. The move is part of a broader strategy for keeping the company stable and focused on long-term growth.
What will happen to the employees?
If you’re concerned about the people who work at these stores, there is a bit of reassurance. Kohl’s says all employees were informed about the changes and offered support. That includes either a competitive severance package or the option to apply for other jobs within the company.
More closures beyond California
California isn’t the only state affected. Kohl’s is also closing stores in:
- Alabama
- Arkansas
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Idaho
- Massachusetts
- New Jersey
- Oregon
- Pennsylvania
- Texas
- Utah
And in Illinois, Ohio, and Virginia, two stores in each state will close.
If one of these stores is your go-to spot for clothes, home goods, or seasonal finds, it may be time to make new shopping plans. But don’t worry — many Kohl’s locations are staying open, and you’ll still be able to shop online.
