Why is JCPenney doing this?

A spokesperson for the company said they appreciate everything the workers have done and that JCPenney is offering support to help them during this tough time. That includes things like severance pay and possibly benefits. A few workers might even get the chance to move to other JCPenney locations.

This isn’t the first time JCPenney has closed stores
This is just the latest step in a bigger downsizing process. Back in 2020, JCPenney filed for bankruptcy, which means they were in serious financial trouble. Since then, they’ve been closing stores across the country.
In May 2025, they closed seven more stores that weren’t doing well. Now, the closure of this Texas warehouse is the next big move.

When Will the Layoffs Happen?

- Second wave: 254 employees will be let go between November 1 and November 14

It’s possible—but not guaranteed. Letters sent to the workers made it clear that they don’t have the automatic right to take over other jobs that are already filled at different JCPenney locations.
