The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has mandated a record-breaking batch of recalls for almost 350,000 cars from some major automobile companies, including Mitsubishi, Rivian, and Hyundai. All the recalls pertain to major safety concerns that span from faulty rearview camera systems to transmission problems that can escalate the risk of crashes and accidents.

Mitsubishi’s huge recall: Almost 200,000 Outlander SUVs

Mitsubishi Motors North America has issued one of the biggest recalls in this category for around 198,940 vehicles. The affected vehicles include:

  • 2022-2024 Mitsubishi Outlander (gasoline-powered SUVs)
  • 2023-2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles)

The problem

The recall is caused by an in-vehicle infotainment system (A-IVI) software failure that causes freezing or complete failure to show rearview camera image. The software failure was improperly programmed, thereby causing obstructed rear view for drivers while in reverse shortly after engine startup.

This recall, NHTSA Campaign Number 25V369, is part of a previous May 2023 recall (23V345) for 89,907 vehicles. Notifications by Mitsubishi are being planned as follows:

  • Dealer notifications: June 16, 2025
  • Owner notifications: Starting June 30, 2025

The A-IVI software will be upgraded at no charge by the dealers, and vehicles that were previously repaired under the previous 2023 recall will require the new repair to be performed.

Hyundai’s transmission safety issue

Hyundai Motor North America recalled more than 42,000 vehicles for a serious wiring defect:

  • 2025 Hyundai Tucson: About 35,500 units
  • 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz: About 6,900 vehicles

The safety issue

The involved vehicles’ transmissions will shift out of “park” without their brake pedal being depressed, greatly enhancing the risk of the vehicle rolling away uncontrollably. This hazardous situation is created by incorrect console extension wiring routing that traps the auto shift lock lever.

The problem was initially found in October 2024, when there was a report to Hyundai’s North American Safety Office of unexpected movement of a corporate fleet 2025 Tucson vehicle. In the course of investigating, the company identified that Santa Cruz vehicles were also vulnerable to the same wiring condition.

Rivian’s lighting system recalls

There have been several recalls for Rivian Automotive’s 2025 electric vehicles on both the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV models:

  • Headlight failure during cold weather
  • Recall 25V085000: 2025 R1T and R1S models equipped with headlight low beams that can fail to light on cold-weather startup. The headlight control module replacement, repair to be expected Summer 2025
  • Exterior lighting software glitches
  • Recall 24V827000: 2025 R1S and R1T models equipped with software version 2024.39.30 that can prevent exterior lights from lighting when “Car Costume” mode is engaged. Free-of-charge over-the-air software update

Other recalls that added to the 350,000 vehicle total

  • Harley-Davidson motorcycle recall: Adding to the larger recall picture, Harley-Davidson took back more than 82,000 Softail motorcycles from 2018 to 2024 because of a serious safety defect that can lead to spontaneous tire failure. Included are FLDE, FLHCS, FLHC, FXLRS, FXLRST, FLHCS ANV, and FXRST models.
  • Ford’s Huge rearview camera recall: Ford Motor Company has recalled approximately 1.1 million vehicles due to rearview camera software problems, including the 2021-2024 models of Bronco, F-150, Edge, and Lincoln models. The reason for the recall is to fix software problems that freeze, slow down, or refuse to show rearview camera images at all.

Consumer action required

Owners can determine whether their cars are impacted through the use of the NHTSA database with their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Repairs will be done at no cost at certified dealers. NHTSA highlights that the repairs need to be addressed right away since the defects that were discovered pose serious safety hazards that can cause accidents or harm.

These recalls illustrate the continued challenge manufacturers have with increasingly sophisticated vehicle software systems and the sheer demand for quick safety action after defects are discovered.
