For decades, regional convenience stores have built cult-like followings—especially among those who swear by their favorite pit-stop coffee or breakfast sandwich. But if you’re a fan of Kum & Go, I’ve got some big news: the beloved convenience store chain is officially losing its name for good. Here’s what’s happening—and why it matters, especially in several U.S. states.

🏁 A quick backstory on Kum & Go

Let’s start here. Kum & Go might have had a name that raised a few eyebrows, but it was no joke when it came to popularity. With over 800 locations across 20 states, this chain built a huge fanbase, especially in Iowa, where it all began.

But in 2023, rival convenience store chain Maverik stepped in and bought Kum & Go. At the time, it wasn’t totally clear what Maverik planned to do with the name.

Well… now we know.

🔄 All Kum & Go stores will become Maverik

Maverik has begun the full rebranding process, turning every Kum & Go into a Maverik store. This is a big deal—especially for loyal customers who grew up with Kum & Go as part of their daily routine.

  • The conversion started in Iowa and Nebraska—two very symbolic places, since Kum & Go was born in Iowa.
  • Stores in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota are still waiting on their makeover—but Maverik says it’s coming.
  • Eventually, every single Kum & Go store will become Maverik. The Kum & Go name? Gone forever.

💬 What Maverik says about the change

Maverik isn’t trying to sneak this change under the radar. They’re loud and proud about it—and they’re asking customers to give the new experience a try.

Here’s what they’re promising:

  • “Exclusive weekly deals”
  • “Epic sweepstakes”
  • And believe it or not, award-winning restrooms” (hey, it’s something).

They also shared this message on their website:

“We’re remodeling your store to bring you the full Maverik experience. Thanks for your patience as we work to upgrade your store.”

🍕 A new food program with Old favorites

If you loved Kum & Go’s grab-and-go meals, you won’t be left out. Maverik says their new BonFire Menu includes:

  • Burritos
  • Wraps
  • Salads
  • Pizzas
  • Sandwiches
  • And plenty of drinks and snacks to fuel any road trip

They’ve even included some items from the Kum & Go menu, hoping to ease the transition for fans.

💳 Say goodbye to &rewards

Unfortunately, there’s one more goodbye—you’ll also lose your Kum & Go &Rewards points. They won’t transfer to Maverik. But there’s a new program: the Adventure Club, or its premium version, Nitro.

These come with:

  • Bigger savings
  • Special perks
  • A few surprises

Still, for many, losing their existing loyalty points might sting a bit.

🛑 Why it feels like the end of an era

Sure, it’s just a name. But in the world of convenience stores, names matter. These are the places people stop at every day, the ones you grew up visiting. And when a name like Kum & Go disappears, it’s more than just a sign change—it’s the end of something familiar.

But who knows? You might just fall in love with Maverik too.

Just… maybe don’t expect anyone to get too excited about those “award-winning restrooms.”
