Volvo recalls more than 400,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a critical software issue that could impair rearview camera visibility. The malfunction can cause the rearview camera screen to darken when the vehicle is driven in reverse gear, which could increase the likelihood of accidents due to reduced visibility.

Details of the recall

It was filed legally with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on May 1, 2025. Volvo describes the issue as a software glitch that appears in each and every one of the recalled cars. There are 413,151 Volvos covered by this recall, made from model year 2021 to model year 2025.

The defect can cause the rearview camera screen not to activate properly and display a blank screen when the vehicle is placed in reverse gear. Although Volvo has indicated that there have been no reported accidents or injuries as a result of this failure, the company is moving ahead to make the necessary repair.

What Owners Should Do

Volvo is offering a free software update to fix the issue. This update can be done in two ways:

  1. In person: Owners can visit an authorized Volvo dealership for the update.
  2. Over-the-Air (OTA): Volvo is also offering the option to receive the update remotely through an OTA download, allowing drivers to complete the fix without a dealership visit.

Volvo will begin mailing owner notification letters on June 24, 2025. The letters will include detailed step-by-step directions on how to receive the software update.
