You probably do not think twice about the soap, shampoo, or lotion you use every day. But a recent recall is now reminding everyone to pay closer attention. A hand soap recall that started in July has now been expanded to include other hygiene products such as hand sanitizers, deodorants, shampoos, and lotions because of contamination concerns. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and DermaRite Industries say the products could contain dangerous bacteria that may pose health risks, especially for people with weakened immune systems.

What products are included in the soap recall

Items taken under expanded recall are for personal care manufactured by DermaRite Industries. The products are utilized commonly in hospitals, nursing homes, and even at homes by certain users.

Some of the recalled products include:

  • DermaKleen Antiseptic Lotion Soap – used for handwashing to reduce bacteria.
  • Gel Rite Instant Hand Sanitizer – a gel sanitizer with vitamin E.
  • UltraSure Deodorant and Antiperspirant – designed to reduce underarm wetness.
  • DermaRain Body Wash and Shampoo – an extra mild cleanser.
  • PeriGuard Skin Protectant – used to prevent irritation from incontinence.
  • TotalBath Body Wash – enriched with vitamin E for full-body cleansing.

A complete list with item numbers, expiration dates, and product photos is available on DermaRite’s official website. If you use DermaRite products, it is very important to double-check your bottles or packaging.

Why the products were recalled

The problem is the contamination by Burkholderia cepacia, a group of bacteria that in medicine is considered dangerous. According to the CDC, this bacterium is commonly located in the soil and water but can cause severe infections in vulnerable beings.

Health risks include:

  • Mild to serious respiratory infections.
  • Fever and fatigue.
  • In severe cases, bloodstream infections that may lead to sepsis, a life-threatening emergency.

Healthy people usually show little to no symptoms, but those with cystic fibrosis, chronic lung diseases, or infections are at greater risk. An additional problem is that this bacterium resists many antibiotics, which makes treatment of infection difficult.

What to do if you have these products at home

DermaRite has instructed distributors, hospitals, and customers to stop using the affected items immediately. If you find any of these products in your home, here is what you should do:

  • Do not use them – even if the product looks fine.
  • Check the recall list on the DermaRite website to match product names and lot numbers.
  • Dispose of recalled items safely according to local waste guidelines.
  • Contact your doctor if you think you may have developed symptoms after using the product.

If you have questions, DermaRite has set up a recall hotline at 888-943-5190 (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST) or by email at [email protected].

How serious is this recall for consumers

The FDA says this recall is being done out of an abundance of caution. While the biggest risk is for hospitalized patients or people with compromised health, everyday consumers are being asked to take it seriously as well. Even a minor skin wound could allow infection if the contaminated product is used.

This recall highlights a key reminder for you: always pay attention to recalls and safety alerts. Even everyday hygiene products that feel safe can sometimes pose unexpected risks.
