If you’ve ever wished to own a phone that carries the stamp of approval of a U.S. president, your wish is about to come true. Donald Trump’s business empire is growing again — and this time it’s going into the phone and wireless plan business.

A $499 phone with a Trump stamping

So let’s start with the phone itself. It’s the T1, and it’s going to run you $499. The cool part about it isn’t so much the technical stuff — it’s how it looks and is branded. It has a metal body that’s gold-colored, and the back is embossed with an American flag. If you flip the screen on, you’ll have Trump’s campaign motto, “Make America Great Again.”

Below, the T1 includes Android 15 and a solid package of specs:

  •  6.8-inch AMOLED display
  •  16-megapixel front camera
  •  50-megapixel rear camera
  •  12 GB of RAM
  •  256 GB of storage

It’s clearly for the individual who doesn’t just require a phone—they require a Trump item in their back pocket.

The “47 plan”: Unlimited service for $47.45 a month

Included with the phone is the new mobile plan, Trump Mobile, and its flagship product is the “47 Plan.” That name isn’t an accident—it’s a nod to Trump being the 47th (and 45th) president of the United States.

The following is what comes with the plan:

  •  Unlimited talk, text, and data
  •  Roadside assistance
  •  Telehealth and pharmacy discounts

The cost is $47.45 per month, a nod to Trump’s presidential budget. That’s more than some of the larger budget carriers—for perspective, Visible by Verizon charges the same price for an equivalent unlimited plan at just $25 a month, and Mint Mobile takes you there for around $30 a month if you sign up for a year.

So what’s the value? According to Trump Mobile, their plan runs on the same networks used by Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. That means you’d be getting reliable nationwide coverage, at least in theory.

Who’s really behind it?

Although it takes his name, Trump Mobile is not manufactured by The Trump Organization. What this is, instead, is a licensing agreement in which the Trump brand and name are being licensed out to some other company in return for a percentage of the profit. It’s the same way in which Trump-branded steaks, vodka, and even footwear have been sold in the past.

And at the bottom of the Trump Mobile page is a disclaimer:

  • Trump Mobile and its products and services are not being designed, developed, manufactured, distributed, or sold by The Trump Organization…
  • Translation: Trump’s people aren’t producing the phone or running the network — they’re just licensing the brand.

Ethics concerns and a profitable business model

Not everyone shares this opinion. Others have criticized the fact that Trump is continuing to make money off his name while holding political office. But give credit where credit is due; the tactic has already earned him over $8 million in 2024 alone through the same sorts of licensing deals.

Is it worth it?

That’s the million-dollar question. You can probably get a Samsung or Google Android flagship phone for $499. You can probably have two lines on some discount carriers for $47.45 a month. So Trump Mobile’s deal isn’t necessarily a dollar deal—unless, of course, you’re buying it for what it means, not what it does.

It’s not really about the service and the specifications. It’s about the symbolism, the brand, and the message. And for some, that’s sufficient.
