If you’re a Coon Rapids, Minnesota, resident who frequents Walmart—or just know someone who is—then this news will be tough to take. One of the more popular Walmart stores in the area, serving over 70,000 residents, is officially closing for good on August 29, 2025.
You have less than a month to get what you can from this site before it’s gone. Whether you buy there every week or just stop by to look at what’s new, this closing will create a gigantic gap for consumers and workers alike.
Where is this happening
The store Walmart is located at Riverdale Drive Northwest in Coon Rapids, the centre of local shopping action. The store has been a convenient place to quickly purchase groceries, gadgets, and even last-minute birthday gifts.
It will soon be no longer.

Why is Walmart closing this store
And why the shutdown? It was due to financial performance, a company spokesman said. In simple terms, the store wasn’t bringing in enough sales.
But there is also a second reason: the format is outdated. Walmart rationalised that the Coon Rapids store still keeps operating in a previous store format that is not aligned with what the customers desire today. It lacks the new amenities and features that today’s people expect from their shopping experience.
Below is what Walmart said in a statement:
We thank our customers who have honoured us with the trust of allowing us to serve them at our Coon Rapids store. We look forward to continuing to serve them at our many convenient locations in the area, on walmart.com, and through home or business delivery.”
What happens to the employees
Now, let’s consider the human factor in this. About 180 workers will be affected by this store closure. But there is good news—Walmart has assured that all workers are eligible to transfer to other nearby Walmart stores.
If you have friends working there, you can rest assured that their memories will remain. Nevertheless, such a shift can be difficult, and it serves as another reminder of how retail employment is constantly evolving with the times.
Is this a trend
In point of fact, yes. This is not the first store Walmart has closed in the region.
In April 2023, Brooklyn Centre’s Shingle Creek Crossing Walmart also shut down owing to revenue issues. That store, too, had developed a reputation as a criminal hotspot, but Walmart never cited that as the reason for closing it down.
And so this latest news out of Coon Rapids tracks a trend that Minnesota and American shoppers alike are starting to notice: Walmart is shutting underperforming stores while growing its digital offerings and delivery and improving in-store features.
Walmart ain’t slowing down
Before assuming that Walmart is struggling, let me clarify that this is not the case.
Actually, Walmart is prospering worldwide. It ranked at the top of the Fortune Global 500 list of the world’s biggest businesses for the 12th consecutive year. Based on figures in 2024, Walmart earned over $600 billion in revenue.
That makes it larger than Amazon, State Grid, and even Saudi Aramco, an oil behemoth. So, although it may be saying goodbye to standalone stores, Walmart remains a retail giant.
So why close stores if business is booming
Great question. It all comes down to efficiency and customer experience.
Walmart is increasingly fascinated by streamlining operations. That means shutting down low-performing stores that aren’t in line with modern retail or aren’t generating decent revenue. That means investing more in:
- E-commerce purchasing
- Curbside pickup
- In-home delivery
- Mobile payment options via the Walmart app
You may have noticed that Walmart does not accept Apple Pay in its physical stores. That’s because they’d rather have customers use the Walmart app, where they can find products, build lists, and even pay—integrating the app into the shopping process.
What’s next for shoppers in Coon Rapids
If this store were your go-to, you’re wondering where you’ll shop now. Happily, Walmart has stores nearby that you can visit. And don’t forget, walmart.com and the Walmart app offer almost everything you’ll find in store—same-day delivery is available in select areas.
Still, for the neighbourhood, it’s the end of an era. For many families, this store has been a quick stop in their weekly routine for years.
