Labor Day, a holiday on the first Monday of September 2025, celebrates American workers and is a federal holiday. Most key services are closed, so planning is necessary. After Labor Day, do the bank, post office, parcel carriers, and Amazon deliveries open?
Banks will be closed for the holiday
With Labor Day being a federal holiday, almost all bank branches, both national banks (like Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo) and regional and community banks, will be closed. Access to cash withdrawals through Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), as well as online and mobile banking, are available, but in-branch teller services will not work on September 1.
U.S. post offices and USPS mail delivery will be closed nationwide
The USPS has eleven federal holidays, one of which is Labor Day. On Monday, September 1, 2025, all retail locations of the post office and processing facilities will be closed. Delivery of mail and parcels will cease altogether, in addition to Post Office Box services, customer service over the phone, and in person. The street-side mail drop boxes and self-service kiosks will be accessible, but the mail will only be processed on the next business day, Tuesday, September 2.
FedEx says no regular pickup or delivery on Labor Day
FedEx suspends regular pickup and delivery on Labor Day. According to FedEx’s holiday schedule for 2025, September 1 is a “Closed” day; hence, FedEx Express, Ground, and Freight do not operate on that day. FedEx Express Critical® service, however, provides shipping 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, for urgent, time-sensitive shipments. Customers needing to arrange for a critical delivery may contact FedEx Express Critical, albeit most retail and printing services in standard FedEx Office locations will be closed, or have modified hours.
UPS ground, air and retail, closed
UPS provides Labor Day as a full service close. All services of UPS ground, air and international shipping will be suspended on the 1st of September. Retail locations of UPS Stores will also remain entirely closed as they observe federal holiday schedules. The only exception is for the UPS Express Critical® service that will still run for emergency shipments at extra costs. Regular pickup, and deliveries will not occur on Labor Day, nor will any retail counter services, and packages dropped off at UPS drop boxes or Access Point locations will await regular operational processing the following day, September 2.
Amazon deliveries are paused until Tuesday
Now that Amazon implements a dual delivery network of its own and a third-party delivery network, Labor Day will see minimal activity for Amazon deliveries. Packages due for delivery on September 1 will only do so on the next business day after Labor Day. Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market grocery deliveries will also suspend for the holiday, although customers may place orders in advance.
Amazon retail locations, such as Amazon Books and Amazon 4-star, may follow host-store holiday hours; therefore, customers should check individual store schedules before heading out. Also, Amazon’s online platform will be available for browsing and ordering, but the shipment progress will temporarily rest.
Planning tips and alternative options
- Advance transactions: All necessary bank transactions, bill payments, or in-branch services need to be completed by Friday, August 29th, or planned for Tuesday, September 2nd.
- Mail and packages: USPS items should be dropped in blue mailboxes prior to midday Friday; otherwise, alternative arrangements should be considered for private carriers that demonstrate Sunday pickups or special holiday services.
- Critical shipments: For time-sensitive shipments with FedEx or UPS, arrange well in advance for FedEx Express Critical or UPS Express Critical, with the expectation of added charges.
- Amazon orders: Utilize expedited shipping before Labor Day and consider any available local same-day delivery service.
- Online services: Most online banking, postal, and carrier tracking tools will be functional on that holiday for scheduling and account management while the physical locations remain closed.
By understanding the holiday schedule for each institution and scheduling their transactions and shipments accordingly, one could avoid delays and guarantee that what they need arrives on time through the Labor Day holiday.
