The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has set into motion budget cuts and also cuts in personnel across various government agencies to include Social Security Administration (SSA). Therefore, numerous Social Security offices throughout the country will be permanently closed. Here is the full list of the locations affected.
Why are these offices closing?
Reports from major news outlets in the United States confirm that the SSA had scheduled the closing of many offices as part of DOG’s extensive campaign to make the government much smaller. Under Elon Musk, DOGE is working in the second term of the Trump administration toward reducing federal expenditure.
DOGE recently came out with a list of nearly 800 federal real estate leases that it plans to terminate. An internal document of the General Services Administration (GSA) that The Associated Press managed to obtain gave information about almost two-thirds of the cancellation’s effective date.

Clarifies office rumors close SSA
Rumor has it that all Social Security offices were closing as the SSA has released a press statement against this.
As of January 1, 2025, the statement says, “the agency has not closed permanently nor announced the closure of any office at the local level.” “Once all of these problems are resolved, those offices will be reopened.”
The SSA acknowledged the closing of only one hearing office, located at White Plains, New York, but clarified that local offices are still functional. Closing an office involves working very closely with congressional representatives; the agency reassigned the affected employees to minimize disruption.
What this means for Social Security services
The agency has been working on identifying underutilized office spaces to ensure taxpayer money is well spent. Most of the closures announced involve hearing rooms that are no longer required because of the upsurge in virtual hearings.
While some of these might be inconveniencing, the SSA maintains that those services would continue to be offered online and at some other operational locations.
