Well, the regular paper Social Security card gets an upgrade. The Social Security Administration (SSA) declared that a digital copy of the Social Security card would be available to all individuals with an online my Social Security account beginning early this summer. In this new feature, users will view and access their Social Security number (SSN) securely over the internet.

The above announcement follows the SSA reverse plans for reducing the telephone service a few weeks back and has clarified the identity verification process for account holders. Users will not need to wait for a physical card but retrieve their SSNs when a digital card is made available.

What the new digital card means for you

According to SSA officials, the digital card was designed with the intention to minimize the necessity for in-office visits and simplify the process for those individuals who have either lost or forgotten their Social Security number. Through this feature, users will directly have access to the data from their accounts with the secure online platform.

Today we are thrilled to offer our account holders this new digital solution,” and Acting SSA Commissioner Lee Dudek said in a statement on April 25. “This enhancement reflects our commitment to better service to the public while maintaining the safety of their private information.”.

Most of the time, such as for employment forms or financial forms, would involve dealing with the digital option instead of carrying around a physical card.

Utilization of the digital SSN functionality

For accessing this digital social security number functional capability, people have to either create a New account or log in with the already existing mysocialsecurity account at ssa.gov. Once they are signed in, users will be able to see the entirety of their Social Security number shown securely on the platform.

The SSA enjoins all qualified people to immediately activate this feature upon its availability early in summer. The purported update “reduces risks associated with lost or stolen cards and enhances customer experience” while also protecting sensitive data.

Need a replacement now? Here’s what to do

Even though a digitized card will be offered soon, this particular channel is impossible at this time. If you happen to misplace your Social Security card or have it stolen recently, you will still have the opportunity to request replacement through the current methods.

Because most of the uses do not ask that the card itself be presented, you may not even need one if you know your SSN. But if you do require it, you can get a replacement card through the Internet by accessing your my Social Security account or call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.

Once your application is processed, a card will be sent to the address provided in your application in a matter of a few business days.

Looking ahead

This digital Social Security card is part of a much larger scale effort on the SSA’s part to modernize its services and extend access to millions of Americans. The physical version isn’t going away, but the digital option is billed to offer significantly faster, safer, and more convenient alternatives for everyday identification needs.
