There is a Social Security payment, and it will not be this Wednesday, August 27 – This is the date when millions of Americans will receive an SSI check

Social Security beneficiaries will be receiving their checks this week

With millions of Americans impatiently scanning their calendars for the arrival of their Social Security, confusion is growing over scheduling changes. For the regular upside-down calendars of the government, Social Security payments will be made on Wednesday, August 27. This entails that SSI checks do not go out at all on Wednesday. Instead, they will be issued early on Friday, August 29, because Labor Day falls on September 1.

Why mail is adjusted for Labor Day

This is a strict policy followed by the Social Security Administration whenever a federal holiday interferes with the normal schedule of payments. If the first day of any month falls on a weekend or on a federal holiday, then SSI payments for that month are pushed to the last working day of the previous month. Since September 1, 2008, is going to be Labor Day-a federal holiday-the SSA will reschedule the September SSI payment to Friday, August 29.

This means that SSI recipients would now collect two payments in August: their regular August payment on August 1 and early payment of September on August 29. The big problem is that it creates a gap in September, since no SSI checks would be issued for that entire month.

Who gets what and when in August and September

Payment types in late August distinguish among the types of Social Security beneficiaries:

  • For regular retirement, survivor, and disability (SSDI) benefits on Wednesday, August 27, from the 21st to the 31st.
  • For Friday, August 29, due to Labor Day, SSI recipients would get their September payments early. This represents their September income coming three days early.

SSI payment amounts and eligibility

SSI amounts for 2025 are capped at maximums, determined by federal regulations. Individual SSI recipients may receive as much as $967/month, whereas eligible couples may get as much as $1,450/month. Though these amounts signify the maximum federal SSI benefits, it would be possible for some states to provide additional supplemental payments.

SSI represents a federal safety net program established particularly for the low-income-aged 65 and older, as well as the disabled and the blind, poor in income and resources. Standard Social Security benefits, on the other hand, are based on work history and earnings while the SSI program gives need-based assistance to those on its fringes.

Impact of Labor Day on Social Security recipients

This Labor Day adjustment is one of many changes on the payment schedule for 2025. The SSA calendar shows SSI recipients will experience many double payment months and consequent months of no payments:

  • Double Payments in August (August 1 and August 29)
  • September: No Payment
  • Double Payments in October (October 1 and October 31)
  • November: No Payment
  • Double Payments in December (December 1 and December 31)

It happens whenever the first day of the month happens to be a weekend or federal holiday. Therefore, SSI recipients’ budgetary planning requires taking care not to consume extra payments too early.

Budgetary implications for the recipients

The implications of the early September payments on August 29 are thus both opportunities and problems for the SSI recipients. The two payments in August were so that recipients had to hold their expenses very tight in order to carry expenses throughout the month of September with no other SSI income coming in.

Fiscally wise, it would be in the best interest of an SSI recipient to:

  • Set aside a portion of the August 29 payment to cover September expenses
  • Whenever possible, align bill due dates with the adjusted payment schedule
  • Do not treat an early payment as “extra money” since it is September’s income

How SSI is different from regular Social Security benefits

This scheduling change, then, is only to be applied to SSI recipients, while regular Social Security scheduled receivers will continue their August and September payments based on the Wednesday schedule as established:

  • September 10 – Birthdays 1-10
  • September 17 – Birthdays 11-20
  • September 24 – Birthdays 21-31

The importance of that distinction is that about 7.4 million Americans receive SSI benefits every month compared to over 70 million receiving regular Social Security payments. Some people receive both benefits, adding to the confusion of tracking their unique payment schedules.

Planning for the payment schedule change

On or before Friday, August 29, SSI recipients should confirm their bank account information and their direct deposit to facilitate the seamless processing of their payments. According to the SSA, the recipients should wait three business days following the scheduled payment date before contacting the agency regarding any missing deposits.

The Labor Day adjustment stands as a reminder of the SSA’s determination to provide beneficiaries with critical income support undisturbed even when federal holidays interfere with the standard schedule. Knowing such timing alterations enables millions of Americans in effectively managing their monthly budget as well as bypassing financial burdens during holiday periods.
