Imagine driving your SUV with confidence—until you press the brake pedal and it doesn’t respond like it should. That’s exactly the concern Ford is addressing right now with a major recall affecting 275,000 vehicles. If you drive a Lincoln Navigator or a Ford Expedition from recent model years, this might interest you.

What’s causing the recall?

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for 273,789 SUVs in the U.S. after discovering a potentially dangerous issue with the vehicle’s front brake lines. According to the recall, these brake lines may rub against the engine air cleaner outlet pipe. Over time, this contact could cause the brake lines to wear out or leak brake fluid — an issue that can dramatically reduce your vehicle’s braking power.

Now that’s the problem no driver wants. Reduced braking performance, especially when you are driving a large SUV, can lead to longer stopping distances or even brake failure in extreme cases.

That’s why Ford and Federal safety regulators have acted quickly to alert affected owners.

These are the vehicles affected

So if you own one of the following models, your vehicle could be involved:

  • Ford Expedition — model years 2022, 2023, and 2024
  • Lincoln Navigator — model years 2022, 2023, and 2024

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected SUVs were built between April 15, 2021, and November 20, 2024.

The breakdown of impacted vehicles is as follows:

  • 223,315 Ford Expedition
  • 50,474 Lincoln Navigators

Note: if your vehicle falls within these ranges, it’s time to check your VIN ( Vehicle Identification Number) and confirm whether it needs repairs.

Warning signs to watch out for

Even if you haven’t received a notice yet, you can keep an eye out for a few key symptoms that could indicate a brake fluid leak:

  • The brake pedal feels softer than usual or travels further when pressed
  • A red brake warning light appears on your dashboard.
  • You notice a visible leak under the vehicle, especially near the front wheels.

If you see any of these signs, don’t wait. Get your SUV checked by a professional mechanic or go directly to the dealership. Brake issues are serious, and the sooner they are addressed, the safer you’ll be.

What’s Ford doing about it?

Ford plans to notify affected vehicle owners starting May 26th, 2025. If you receive a recall notice, here’s what to expect:

  1. Your local Ford or Lincoln dealership will inspect the brake lines.
  1. If necessary, they will replace the brake lines and adjust or replace the air cleaner outlet pipe — completely free of charge.

However, you could call the customer service using the assigned recall number 25S47.

How can you check your vehicle’s status?

Even if you don’t receive a letter, you don’t have to wait. You can be proactive right now by taking either of these steps:

  • Call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (ensure your VIN and the recall number are handy.)

It takes just a few minutes and could save you a lot of worry.

What should you do now?

If your vehicle is affected, make an appointment with your dealer once you receive the recall notice. Until then, drive cautiously and monitor your brake performance. If your vehicle isn’t affected, great— no further action is required. But if you are unsure, it’s better to double-check than to leave your safety to chance.
