If you own a Midea window air conditioner, listen up. Midea recalled some 1.7 million U and U+ window air conditioners in the United States—and nearly 46,000 more in Canada—because they may leave you vulnerable to toxic mold.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the issue is caused by water within the units that does not drain. It creates a breeding ground for mold, which can lead to respiratory infection, sneezing, sore throats, and other conditions if you happen to be allergic or have a compromised immune system.

What you need to do right away

If your air conditioner is on the recall list, don’t keep using it. You can do either of two things:

1. Get a Refund: Midea will give you a prepaid shipping label so that you can send back the unit. Or, you can clip the power cord and send a photo via email to get your refund.

2. Free Fix: Midea will have a technician visit your home or give you a do-it-yourself fix kit. The fix includes a new drain plug and bubble level to prevent future pooling.

Don’t use your unit until your unit is repaired, and review the drainage instructions online.

Why this recall matters

To date, a minimum of 152 mold cases have been reported, and 17 people have experienced symptoms of coughing, sneezing, sore throats, and respiratory illnesses. The ACs were sold nationwide between March 2020 and May 2025 at retailers like Costco, Home Depot, Best Buy, Amazon, and more, and they cost anywhere from \$280 to \$500.
