Ford has released a huge recall involving more than 100,000 of its F-150 trucks because of a serious safety issue. The recall will impact a large number of drivers, so it’s worth knowing which models are involved, what the issue is, and what you can do if your vehicle is affected.

What’s the problem? A loose wheel bolt could cause wrecks

Ford discovered that some F-150 trucks of model years 2023 to 2025 may possess a defective rear-axle hub bolt. The bolt is located in the wheel assembly, and it can break while driving.

When the bolt does break, it can destroy a part called the axle hub splines. This can cause the vehicle to roll away on its own, greatly raising the chances of an accident occurring. Because this is a safety hazard, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a notice of recall on August 8, 2025.

This is not the first recall for this issue

This recall is further over a recall that occurred in December of 2023. This previous recall involved Ford F-150 trucks produced between model years 2021 and 2023, with the same issue with the rear-axle hub bolt.

With this recall, however, Ford is addressing the problem for even newer models of trucks with model years going from 2023 all the way through to 2025. This shows that the problem is ongoing and needs to be taken care of immediately in order to protect drivers.

Which Ford trucks are affected?

The recall involves approximately 103,000 Ford F-150 trucks built between 2023 and 2025. These trucks are specifically those that have the Trailer Tow Max Duty package, which is designed to help with heavy towing.

If your Ford truck fits the bill, it could be part of the recall.

What will Ford do to fix the issue?

To correct the defect, Ford will replace the left and right rear-axle shaft assemblies of the recalled trucks. Such replacement is necessary because it prevents the wheel bolt from cracking and removes the risk of an unsafe crash.

Importantly, Ford will make this replacement free to the owners of the recalled trucks.

How will owners learn about it?

The owners of the involved vehicles will be notified by mail. Ford plans to send letters between August 18, 2025, and May 22, 2026. The letters will explain the problem and give instructions for how to get the repair done.

If you would rather check your vehicle’s recall status before a letter is sent, simply contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. When you call, simply mention the recall code: 25S82.

What should you do if your truck is recalled?

If you own one of the recalled trucks, have it taken to a Ford or Lincoln dealership as soon as possible. The dealership will replace rear-axle shaft assemblies on both sides.

Don’t ignore this recall! Fiddling around in a truck that has this flaw could lead to a serious crash.

How to check if your vehicle has been recalled

If you are unsure whether your car has been recalled, here are easy methods to verify:

Utilise the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall database. It is a free Internet site where you can search for your car’s make, model, and year.

You can also check the USA TODAY motor vehicle and auto recall database for data and announcements on recalls.

Both sites allow you to enter your vehicle’s information to see if it is subject to any recalls.

Other recent recalls you should be aware of

Ford is not the only automaker with recent car recalls. There are a couple of other major recalls in the news currently:

  • Over 23,000 Lincoln Aviator vehicles were recently recalled for a number of safety concerns.
  • Over 300,000 Kia vehicles were recalled recently for a variety of reasons.
  • Jeep, Genesis, and Winnebago alone have recalled more than 125,000 vehicles in total.

If you own one of these models, it’s worth getting a recall check just like with the Ford trucks.

Why recalls are important to drivers

Recalls matter since they fix safety problems that manufacturers catch after vehicles are already being sold. In other instances, flaws may not be detected until thousands of vehicles are on the road.

Ignoring a recall notice can put you and others at risk. Axles and wheel bolts in your vehicle are crucial for safe driving. Malfunctioning parts in these components can lead to loss of control, accidents, and even harm.

Fixing your vehicle under an official recall is usually at no cost and will protect you from costly damage and unsafe situations in the future.

How to stay informed about recalls

Car and truck buyers must stay on their toes about recalls while their vehicles are in service. Here are some tips to stay up to date:

  • Have your vehicle registered with the manufacturer so that you’ll get official notice of recalls.
  • Search the NHTSA recall database every year or when buying a used car.
  • Look at automobile web sites or news programs, like USA TODAY’s app, which regularly publish recalls.

Always act immediately to bring back reminders and arrange maintenance at once.

Preventive actions will rescue you and your investment.

What’s next for Ford?

Ford is actively working on repairing the recalled trucks and preventing any accidents caused by the faulty wheel bolt. Ford urges owners to contact dealerships and get repairs completed as early as possible.

The recall is a reminder that even the best-selling, best-manufactured trucks may occasionally fail. But Ford’s swift action is indicative of a commitment to safety and customer satisfaction.
