Millions of New Yorkers will receive a one-time inflation relief rebate of up to $400 this fall, funded by the state’s record-breaking sales tax collections. Depending on your filing status and 2023 New York adjusted gross income (AGI), see below for what you can expect.
Single filers: $150 or $200
Single filers who filed tax year 2023 Form IT-201 and were not claimed as a dependent are entitled to either $200 or $150, based on their AGI. If your 2023 New York AGI was $75,000 or less, you’ll receive the complete $200 rebate. However, if your AGI is between $75,001 and $150,000, you’ll receive a partial rebate of $150.
Married filing jointly: $300 or $400
For married joint filers, the rebate is $400 or $300 depending on joint AGI. Married couples whose combined AGI is $150,000 or less will have the highest rebate of $400. Couples with combined AGI between $150,001 and $300,000 will get $300.
Other filing statuses
For separate and married filers, the credit is $200 if their AGI is $75,000 or less, and $150 if their AGI is $75,001 to $150,000. Head-of-household filers are the same: $200 if AGI is $75,000 or less and $150 if AGI is $75,001 to $150,000. Surviving spouses with an AGI of $150,000 or less are eligible for $400, and those with an AGI of $150,001 to $300,000 receive $300.
All other qualifying filing statuses follow these income ranges and payment levels along the same lines.
No application required
You don’t need to submit a special application for this rebate. Provided that you have submitted your 2023 New York State Resident Income Tax Return (Form IT-201) and meet the income and dependency tests, your check will be sent automatically between October and November of 2025 by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance as also stated in this article, October when New York’s $400 stimulus checks arrive – These are the thousands of New Yorkers who will be able to collect tax relief. The mailings won’t be sent in regional order, so your delivery date will vary.
Earning qualified household heads and surviving spouses will be receiving identical stimulus checks that are determined by their respective income levels. See how to determine your stimulus check value in New York.
Why these rebates?
New York’s 2025–2026 budget allocated over $3 billion to its first-inflation rebates to refund excess sales tax revenues due to inflation to residents. The plan is to help families absorb the impact of inflation and cope with higher prices for products and daily expenditures.
These rebates are calculated using 2023 tax year returns, which must be filed by April 15, 2024. Rebuttal rebates will be sent out during mid-October through November 2025. No further action is required, as the above process happens automatically. Be on the lookout for mail this autumn to receive your New York inflation relief rebate without further effort.
