When you’re heading to the airport, you probably think about wearing something comfy—maybe leggings or jeans for that long plane ride. But doctors are now warning that some of those comfortable clothes could actually put your health at risk during your flight.
Tight clothes can be dangerous
Dr. Hugh Pabarue, a vein specialist at Metro Vein Centers, says wearing tight clothes—like skinny jeans or tight leggings—can affect your blood circulation while flying.
“Tight clothing can reduce the blood’s ability to flow in and out of your legs,” said Dr. Pabarue.
When you’re sitting on a plane for hours, your blood can pool in your legs. This increases the risk of developing something called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is a dangerous blood clot in your leg. It can be very serious if the clot travels to your lungs.
Dr. Pabarue also warned that wearing tight clothes could cause other problems like
- Compartment syndrome (painful pressure in your muscles)
- Meralgia paresthetica (numbness or tingling in the legs)
Even though not all leggings are harmful, the doctor suggests avoiding tight-fitting pants, especially those that squeeze your waist, thighs, or ankles.
Fire risk in emergencies
It’s not just health experts sounding the alarm. Aviation safety specialist Christine Negroni says leggings, especially the synthetic ones, are also risky in the event of a plane emergency.
“Leggings are made from synthetic fibers, which are made from petroleum products,” Negroni said.
If there’s an emergency landing, the biggest risk is often fire, not the crash itself. In such a case, clothes made from synthetic materials can melt into your skin or cause severe burns, making it harder for you to escape the plane.
What should you wear instead?
So, what should you wear on your next flight? Experts recommend avoiding:
- Tight jeans
- Regular leggings
- Any tight clothes made from synthetic fabrics
Instead, choose:
- Loose, breathable clothing made from natural fibers like cotton
- Medical-grade compression stockings to help with blood flow
- Comfortable shoes that are easy to take off if needed
Dr. Peter J. Pappas, a vascular surgeon with the Center for Vein Restoration, suggests compression socks as a great alternative. They apply gentle pressure to your legs to help keep the blood moving and reduce swelling.
“Compression stockings prevent swelling and provide pain relief,” said Dr. Pappas.
They can also reduce the chance of developing a clot during long flights, especially for people with varicose veins.
Bottom line
Even though plane accidents are rare, and you probably won’t deal with a fire or health issue, it’s still smart to dress in a way that keeps you safe and healthy. Loose-fitting clothes and compression socks are much better choices than tight jeans or leggings.
Next time you fly on American Airlines, United, or Southwest, take a second look at your outfit. Your safety might depend on it.
