Amazon’s $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is more than just news because it affects millions of Americans who signed up for Amazon Prime over the past several years. Some of you may be eligible to receive up to $51 in refunds. Let me walk you through how you can qualify, when this payment will start, and what steps you may need to take.

Why did the settlement happened

According to the FTC, Amazon used misleading practices to get users into Prime subscriptions and then made it hard for theseusers to cancel them. Under this settlement, Amazon agreed to pay billions to customers who are affceted and also pay civil penalties.

Part of the settlement also requires Amazon to change how it handles Prime sign-ups, cancellation flows, and disclosures to make it easier for future users and avoid any form of misleading activity.

Who is eligible for a $51 refund?

You might be eligible if you meet these criteria:

  • You subscribed to Amazon Prime between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025.
  • You either signed up through what the settlement calls a “challenged enrollment flow” or you tried and failed to cancel your Prime subscription.
  • Depending on how often you used Prime benefits, you may qualify for automatic payment or you may need to submit a claim.

Now if you are wondering what “Challenged enrollment flows”are, they include certain pages on Amazon’s website, such as shipping option pages, Prime Video enrollment, or the single page checkout. According to critics, those pages may have hidden or auto-selected prime subscription for you without clearly showing what you were signing up for.

Automatic payments vs. claims: who gets which?

Automatic payments

If you used no more than three Prime benefits in any 12-month period and signed up through a “challenged flow,” you are qualified for an automatic refund. You will not need to file a claim.

Claim-based payments

If you used up to ten Prime benefits per year or had trouble canceling Prime and your experience matches the criteria, you will need to submit a claim once Amazon sends you the paperwork.

When will the payments be made?

For automatic refunds, Amazon is expected to issue payments by December 24. This means that Amazon will notify claim-eligible customers with instructions by January 23. So if you are among them, you will be getting notified as well. Once you are notified, you have until July 23, 2026 to file your claim. The refund amounts are capped at $51 per person, regardless of how much Prime you paid.

If there are more eligible claimants than the refund pool can cover at full amounts, the settlement allows for pro rata payments, which means some people might receive less than than the full amount of $51.

How Amazon and the FTC are responding

Amazon said it has not done anything wrong, and the company says they always follow the law. It also says it will keep making it clear and simple for customers to sign up or cancel their Prime memberships and will continue to offer strong value for members.

The FTC, meanwhile, sees this as a landmark settlement against “subscription traps” and manipulative website designs.

What you need to do to see if you qualify

To check if you qualify, here are a few things you need to do:

  1. Check your Prime sign-up date — was it between June 2019 and June 2025?
  2. Review how often you used Prime benefits — keep in mind the thresholds for automatic vs. claim refunds.
  3. Watch your email and mail — Amazon will send notices and claim instructions to eligible users so you need to be on the look out for this message.
  4. If asked to claim, act within the deadline — you will need to submit your form as at when required to avoid missing out on this refund.
  5. Be aware of pro rata distribution — in some cases, you may get less than $51 depending on how many people are eligible for this settlement.

This settlement is a big deal — not just for the cash, but for how it holds companies accountable for subscription practices. If you think you qualify, keep an eye out for the refund notice.
