Walmart customers are facing a hard deadline to claim up to $53,250 cash settlement by August 7

Just one day is left, August 7, 2025, for members of the class to make their claims for up to $53,250 in cash toward settlement of the store’s recent data breach involving customers. Eligible members of the class could also claim up to $1 million in insurance coverage.

Background of the data breach

In late 2024, Walmart stated that the unauthorized access of customer cellphone numbers and other related personal information had been carried directly or indirectly through some forms of compromise of its online systems. The breach had put hundreds of thousands of Walmart.com users at the risk of being harmed who were known to have provided their phone numbers for purposes like order confirmation, two-factor authentication, or marketing communications. Consequently, in response to a class action suit, Walmart had agreed to a proposed settlement in favor of the affected persons.

Details pertaining to the settlement and eligibility

The approved settlement provides for cash compensation to eligible members for:

  • Up to $53,250 in cash payment, depending on the severity of harm and documented losses for credit monitoring, identity theft restoration, and other time spent dealing with matters related to the breach.
  • Insurance benefits, in favor of an individual, of up to $1 million for unreimbursed losses not covered by the cash payment, including legal fees, medical monitoring, and other breach-related expenses.

To qualify, a claimant must prove that they:

  • Had, before November 2024, provided a cellphone number to Walmart.com or loyalty accounts in-store.
  • Received unauthorized calls or texts, or otherwise incurred damages directly resulting from the breach.
  • Were residents of the US at the time of the breach.

How to file a claim

Individuals making claims must do so via the online portal of the settlement administrator or submit a written request by mail at post by the deadline of August 7, 2025. The process shall include:

  • User registration at the settlement website using an active email address.
  • Filling an online claim form with personal data, along with proof of Walmart customer status (an order confirmation number or loyalty card number) and documentation supporting claims for damages resulting from the breach (phone bills, receipts for credit monitoring services).
  • Uploading scanned copies of supporting documents or mailing hard copies to the settlement administrator’s address.

Late claim submission or failure to produce proper documentation may lead to denial of benefits. The administrator will recommend that claims should be submitted at least three business days in advance of August 7.

Scope of insurance coverage

Beyond the cash payment, affected customers can obtain additional compensation from the insurance fund established under the settlement. This insurance covers:

  • Identity restoration services: The legal and administrative costs of restoring an identity from theft.
  • Medical monitoring: Medical testing and treatment expenses upon identification of fraudulent medical activity.
  • Legal expenses: All legal fees for defence against breach-related issues or against fraudulent claims.

Claimants will have to itemize their claims and submit those expenses with their initial claim or by a deadline.

Potential payout examples

The maximum cash payout is $53,250, but many claimants will receive smaller amounts based on their circumstances. For instance:

  • A class member buying credit monitoring would be paid back to $300 for loss of two hours to discuss the fraud alert.
  • A small business owner with unauthorized charges on their phone bill for an amount of $2,000 could claim direct losses against available funds.

Customers affected by nuisance calls alone can still claim a nominal statutory minimum payment, which usually ranges from $50 to $200 depending on the number of claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What happens if I miss the August 7 deadline?

A: General cut-off of late claims will apply, barring extensions in the settlement agreement in extraordinary circumstances, such as hospitalization.

Q: Can I opt out and sue Walmart?

A: Class members wanting to go through individual lawsuits must opt out of the settlement, which has to be done by submitting a written request by August 7. Failing to do so will unleash Walmart from further liability towards breach-related claims.

Q: How will payments be made?

A: Approved claims will be paid directly into the claimants’ bank accounts or sent by check in the mail within 60 days of the closed claim period.

Next steps for customers affected

With just one day left, all Walmart customers should order confirmations, loyalty account statements, phone bills, and receipts regarding expenses they incurred involving the breach should all be gathered.

  • Confirm the submission: Save or print all receipts proving submission for future reference.

The August 7 deadline says that after that date, this will no longer be a window through which Walmart customers can claim their due amount from $53,250 cash along with another million-dollar worth of insurance relative to the data breach. Acting right now means they have to pull together the best evidence and maximize compensation under the agreement. Otherwise, this opportunity may skirt past them and with it,” the safety net and reimbursement.” An immediate response is more than important.
