The United States’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class II immediate recall of three frozen loaves of bread produced by Upper Crust Bakery LP because of glass shards on the surface of the loaves. The recall includes the consumers and retailers in six states, and up to April 2025, a total of 818 cases of tainted bread were found. No injuries or illnesses have been reported, but the FDA recommends that glass ingestion can cause oral trauma, choking, or gastrointestinal injury.

Summary of the recall

Upper Crust Bakery LP, doing business as Crest Hill Bakery in Glenn Dale, Maryland, recalled the item on April 12, 2025, following the finding that there were pieces of glass on the top of its frozen bread products. Recalled items are Ancient Grains Hoagie Rolls, Multigrain Sourdough, and Whole Grain Multigrain loaves shipped to Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Ohio grocery stores.

The FDA classified the recall Class II, low risk for serious health effects but still for possible temporary or reversible effects of exposure.

Products and lot numbers involved

Recalled are certain frozen bread lots bearing specified lot numbers and packaging:

  • Ancient grains Hoagie Roll (4 oz): Packaged in corrugated paper cartons (CP45) with lot #90 and recall F-0741-2025. 89 cases were shipped.
  • Multigrain Sourdough (18 oz): In CP12 corrugated paper cartons with lot #90 and recall number F-0742-2025. 699 cases are recalled, the biggest chunk of the recall.
  • Whole Grain Multigrain (20 oz): In CP12 cartons with lot #92 and recall number F-0743-2025. Thirty cases of this are recalled.

Customers are asked to check their freezers for these items as the bread has been sold frozen and possibly still stored. The tainted products were picked up by wholesalers and retailers who sell artisanal baked products, though the FDA would not provide specific supermarket names. Upper Crust Bakery distributes through foodservice and retail outlets, as well as private-label arrangements with national chains. The bread reached Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Ohio stores, some of which may have been sold under different brand names.

Health risks and consumer precautions

Glass contamination in food is a dangerous hazard, such as cuts to the mouth, throat, or digestive tract, choking, and internal bleeding in the event sharp pieces are swallowed. The FDA recommends that the consumers not touch or eat the recalled bread and dispose of it safely or return it to the store where purchased for a refund. The companies need to take the products off the shelves and call Upper Crust Bakery for reimbursement.

Company response and corrective actions

Upper Crust Bakery has not made the reason for the glass contamination publicly available but corrective action is reportedly in progress. The bakery, which positions itself as a superior supplier of artisan bread, focuses on the quality and safety standards of its five North American plants. Its retail partners are working together with the bakery to facilitate returns and avoid consumer frustration.

Continuous monitoring and reporting

The FDA tracks the progress of the recall closely and advises consumers to report adverse effects through its online MedWatch reporting form. Although there have been no injuries associated with the recall, consumers who have ingested the products and notice abdominal cramps, bleeding, or swallowing problems should consult a physician immediately.

This incident highlights the need for regulatory oversight of food safety and heeding recall announcements. Consumers in the affected states are cautioned to be vigilant and check their bread products against the lot numbers provided to avoid possible harm.
