Blue Bell Creameries is recalling a popular ice cream flavour after a packaging mistake could put people with nut allergies at serious risk. The Brenham, Texas–based company announced that Moo-llennium Crunch ice cream was accidentally placed in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cartons, which do not list nuts as ingredients.

What went wrong

The mix-up involves half-gallon cartons that have the code 061027524. The cartons say Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, but the lid says Moo-llennium Crunch — and the ice cream inside contains almonds, walnuts, and pecans. Because those nuts aren’t listed on the container, customers with allergies could have a “serious or life-threatening allergic reaction,” according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

A Blue Bell employee spotted the error after finding two mislabelled cartons while restocking at a store. So far, there have been no reports of illnesses or reactions linked to this recall.

Where Was the Ice Cream Sent?

The affected products were shipped to retailers in 16 states:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Indiana
  • Illinois
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • New Mexico
  • Oklahoma
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia

If you recently bought a half-gallon of what appears to be Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream, check the packaging carefully. If the lid says Moo-llennium Crunch or the carton has the code 061027524, do not eat it.

What is Moo-llennium Crunch?

Moo-llennium Crunch is one of Blue Bell’s classic flavours. It’s a creamy vanilla base with crunchy pieces of dark chocolate, caramel chunks, almonds, walnuts, and pecans. The problem? Those nuts are nowhere to be found on the mislabelled Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough carton.

While Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is nut-free, Moo-llennium Crunch is packed with tree nuts — making this labelling error particularly dangerous for anyone with nut sensitivities.

What should you do if you have this ice cream?

Blue Bell urges customers to return any affected ice cream to the store for a full refund. If you have a nut allergy and accidentally ate the mislabelled product, contact a doctor right away if you experience symptoms such as swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing.

Ice cream recalls are becoming more common

This isn’t the first labelling issue to hit the frozen dessert aisle this month. Earlier in August, Friendly’s Cookies & Cream ice cream was recalled in three states after being packaged in Vanilla Bean cartons that didn’t list soy and wheat as ingredients. Like the Blue Bell recall, that mix-up posed a risk to people with food allergies.

Why packaging mistakes matter

Food recalls like this one show how a small production error can have big consequences. David E. Johnson, a branding and safety consultant, explains, “People expect that what they see on the label is exactly what’s inside. If a company breaks that trust, even by accident, it raises safety concerns.”

The FDA stresses that any undeclared allergens can be dangerous, especially tree nuts, which are among the leading causes of severe allergic reactions in the U.S.

The bottom line

Blue Bell says it is working to make sure this doesn’t happen again. “We take the safety of our customers very seriously,” the company said in a statement. “We are sorry for the error and are committed to correcting it quickly.”

If you live in one of the 16 states affected, check your freezer for half-gallon cartons of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough with a Moo-llennium Crunch lid or the code 061027524. When in doubt, don’t take a bite — take it back.
