National firefly fuel bottle recall due to the danger of death

More than 11,000 bottles of Firefly Safe & Green liquid fuel, sold at Walmart and Amazon, are being recalled in a hurry after federal regulators warned of potential significant safety risks, including poisoning and death.

What’s being recalled

The Firefly Safe & Green 32 oz. fuel bottles are subject to the recall. On August 14, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that nearly 11,200 bottles sold between August 2019 and May 2025 are included.

The Sarasota, Fla., firm, Firefly Fuels Inc., markets the products as environmentally friendly, biodegradable, odorless liquid fuels for candles, lanterns, torches, and lamps. But federal officials weren’t pleased with the packaging and labeling of the bottles.

Why it’s hazardous

The CPSC says the bottles are in contravention of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act and the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.

The nozzle applicator is not child-resistant.

The label misleadingly says “Non-Toxic”.

This combination poses a dangerous poisoning threat to children. Firefly fuel consists of hydrocarbons, which are poisonous if ingested or inhaled. Even small amounts have a tendency to migrate into the lungs and cause chemical pneumonia, lifelong damage to the lungs, or even death.

While nobody has been injured yet, officials warn that the risk is too great to ignore.

What should consumers do?

If you possess one of these bottles, do not wait. The CPSC recommends that consumers:

  • Remove the non-child-resistant nozzle applicator immediately.
  • Use the original child-resistant closure that was packaged on the bottle.
  • If you do not have the original cap, keep the bottle out of children’s reach at all times.
  • Customers should also contact Firefly Fuels for a replacement free child-resistant lid and new label.

Where is it sold?

The fuel bottles were sold online at:

  • Amazon.com
  • Walmart.com
  • FireflyFuel.com (direct from the company)

Each bottle cost approximately $20.

Amazon and Walmart respond

Both large box stores have stepped in to block further sales.

Amazon said:

“Our Product Safety Team proactively reviews safety complaints. When we determine a recall, we suspend sales and notify and warn customers and sellers immediately.”

Walmart added:

“We’re committed to our customers’ safety and health. During a product recall, we move quickly to remove the product from our shelves and websites.”

What’s next?

Buyers of these bottles must call Firefly Fuels immediately to:

  • Be sent a new label to alert to the danger.
  • Be given a free new lid if the original child-resistant top is lost.

The CPSC indicates these actions are essential to avoid accidental poisoning, particularly in homes with toddlers.

Why this recall matters

This is not just an error in labelling. Hydrocarbon fuels are toxic, and mispackaging increases the ease with which children can open packages and drink toxic liquids accidentally. A sip is fatal.

The recall also displays how safety standards are applied: products containing toxic materials must use child-resistant packaging and not make false claims of safety.
