A rebound move after closures
After a tough stretch that forced Nordstrom to close several stores ahead of schedule earlier this year, the department store chain is rebounding with a string of new store openings across the country. Shoppers in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas will get to know brand-new Nordstrom stores in their neighborhoods.
The growth is an unambiguous shift in strategy. While numerous stores have taken a hit post-pandemic, Nordstrom is showing that it still has faith in physical retail—especially when paired with its growing online presence.
Where the new stores are opening
The opening of new stores commenced on September 18, when Nordstrom opened the stores in Longmont, Colorado, and Coral Springs, Florida. Further stores will open in the weeks to come.
Here is the entire list of new store openings this autumn:
- Sept. 18: Suwanee, Georgia and Longmont, Colorado
- Sept. 18: Coral Springs, Florida
- Oct. 2: Estero, Florida and Holbrook, New York
- Oct. 9: Flower Mound, Texas
- Oct. 16: Melbourne, Florida and Hyannis, Massachusetts
- Oct. 23: Lakeland, Florida and Meridian, Idaho
- Oct. 30: Prosper, Texas and Lake Grove, New York
The final two openings on October 30 will complete the company’s fall expansion push.
A glimpse of 2026
Nordstrom isn’t content to rest on its laurels with this group of new stores. The company already has other openings planned for 2026, including one at the El Camino Promenade in Encinitas, California, set for the spring of 2026.
Gemma Lionello, President of Nordstrom Rack, said the company is excited to welcome new communities. “We look forward to being part of the Encinitas community and serving our customers with an amazing assortment of great brands at great prices,” she said.
Balancing openings with closures
Although the new locations are good news for shoppers, Nordstrom has also been making some tough choices. In August, it shut a location at The Saint Louis Galleria in Missouri and another at Santa Monica Place in California. It shut two Massachusetts stores earlier this year, one in Peabody and another in Braintree.
The firm indicated that most of the closures are a consequence of problems going back to the pandemic. However, Nordstrom emphasized that it would take care of employees who are impacted by the store closures, including helping them find alternative jobs in the firm.
Why Nordstrom is betting on growth
The expansion comes at a time when much of the retail sector is tightening its purse strings. But Nordstrom is embracing its greatest strength: offering an extensive mix of fashion and lifestyle products at affordable prices through its Rack stores.
The chain currently operates 26 Nordstrom full-line locations and 68 Nordstrom Rack locations in California alone, showing just how much emphasis it places on large markets. By concentrating on where traffic and demand are strongest, Nordstrom is betting it can thrive even as the retail world continues to evolve.

What it means for shoppers
To frequent customers, this expansion is convenient. Additional stores mean increased exposure to sales, additional opportunities to browse wanted brands in stores, and a further merging of in-store and internet experiences.
As Nordstrom grows roots in more states, communities will have something to anticipate beyond shopping alone, including local jobs and fresh activity at shopping malls where stores open.
The big picture
The mix of closings and new openings is a company still trying to get its sea legs in a post-pandemic world. Meanwhile, Nordstrom’s fall expansion is a clear message: the retailer isn’t backing off. It’s doubling down on its presence across the U.S. Florida, New York, and Texas consumers will be the first to see the changes, but with all going as anticipated, many more locations could be added in 2026 and beyond.
