IKEA is introducing a falafel ball to its restaurant menu in the U.S., marking a plant-based addition to its iconic round-food lineup. This new falafel ball is crispy on the outside, tender inside, and is made with chickpeas, zucchini, onions, and spices. It will be served with couscous, aioli, and a slice of lemon.
Why is IKEA adding falafel to the menu now?
This year marks 40 years since IKEA first introduced its Swedish meatballs in the U.S. To celebrate that milestone, IKEA decided to expand its “food balls” offerings by adding the falafel ball. Also, IKEA is pushing to feature more plant-based options so more people can enjoy meals aligned with sustainable and inclusive food choices. Using chickpeas as the base helps with both flavor and affordability.

Will this replace the Swedish meatball?
Nope. IKEA is not removing its Swedish meatballs. The falafel is an addition, not a replacement. Think of it as another option, especially for people who prefer plant-based choices.
What IKEA spokespersons are saying
Daniel Yngvesson, IKEA’s Global Food Designer, said:
“We sell flatpack furniture and round shaped food!”
He added:
“Following the many different meatball variations introduced over the years, once we started testing recipes, we felt the falafel would be the perfect addition to the menu. The falafel has become a staple in Swedish food culture over the years, and the aromatic and nutty flavor is a beloved favorite all over the world.”

How does this fit into IKEA’s plant-based and sustainability strategy?
IKEA already offers alternative “food balls” beyond just the meat version — for example, veggie balls, plant-balls, etc. The falafel ball reinforces IKEA’s goal to provide inclusive meals that are affordable and plant-rich. This could attract customers who are vegetarian, vegan or those simply looking for lighter or more sustainable options.
