An announcement from Frito-Lay declared a voluntary recall of their Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips due to a serious health hazard. What happens is that a small percentage of the bags may contain nacho cheese-flavored tortilla chips, which contain an undeclared milk allergen; This is a serious consideration for a person with a milk allergy or an extreme sensitivity wherein consumption may set off anaphylactic reactions leading to death.

The chips affected were sold at two major retail chains, namely Walmart and Target, and are not considered safe for people with milk allergies anymore.

Where the product was sold and when

According to Frito-Lay’ parent company PepsiCo, less than 1,300 bags of the recalled 13 oz. bags had been distributed. These products went on sale from March 7, 2025, both in stores and online and were sold in the following 13 states:

  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia

How to identify the recalled chips

The date on the front of the bag under Guaranteed Fresh Date is the simplest way to tell whether a product is affected. The affected chips should be dated “20 MAY 2025”. Customers should then find the manufacturing codes as follows:

  • 471106504 – 18 13:XX
  • 471106505 – 85 13:XX
  • 471106506 – 85 13:XX
  • 471106507 – 85 13:XX

Note: The “XX” in the code represents any number between 30 and 55.

If anyone finds a chip bag matching those codes and dates, it should be avoided, especially by a milk-allergic liker.

In the event you have the product

Frito-Lay states that consumers must immediately throw away all recalled chips affected. Fortunately, there are no risks for anyone without milk allergies. However, those with allergies or sensitivities may want to be especially cautious in such cases. So far, no illnesses related to the recalled chips have reportedly occurred.

Consumers can reach out to Frito-Lay by calling the official consumer hotline or on the website set up by PepsiCo for the recall.

Response from the company and next steps

PepsiCo stated: “A limited number of 13 oz bags of Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips are being recalled because they may actually include nacho cheese tortilla chips; hence there may be an undeclared milk allergen.”

The company further added that safeguarding its consumers will always take the highest priority, and this precautionary measure is the only reason for this recall.

Consumers should check their cabinets and spread the word to others who may have purchased Tostitos chips recently.
