Hello Kitty meets Starbucks

What requires three apples, has a red ribbon, and is the newest family member of Starbucks? Hello Kitty — the globe’s most beloved character, loved for being cute and sweet.

Starbucks collaborated with Hello Kitty parent Sanrio on a new initiative all about kindness, friendship, and a little nostalgia. The Hello Kitty limited-edition collection, debuting November 6 at Starbucks in the United States and Canada, brings the warmth of the season together with Hello Kitty’s kawaii style.

“For more than 50 years, Hello Kitty has brought people together across cultures and generations,” said Sanrio, Inc. Senior Vice President of Brand Management and Marketing Jill Koch. “Her universal message of friendship and acceptance and her instantly recognisable look continue to captivate fans around the globe.”

A match made in nostalgia

According to Kap Pitarys, Starbucks’ director of U.S. merchandise, this partnership felt completely natural. “Starbucks and Hello Kitty have strong fandoms and deep roots in culture,” he said. “Interestingly, both were born in the 70s—Hello Kitty in 1974 and Starbucks in 1971. We’re excited to bring back that nostalgic vibe this holiday season.”

The tone of this collection, “Together in Fun Forever”, is that these two brands represent fun, friendship, and warmth. It’s a share-of-positivity partnership that encourages consumers to share the joy of friendship with every cup of coffee or adorable collectible being shared.
