Nordstrom has officially confirmed that two of its stores will be closed in the coming weeks. Nordstrom has been performing well in recent months, the company explained that these closures are related to lease issues and changes in shopping patterns. If you are a Nordstrom customer, here is what you need to know about which locations are closing, why they are shutting down, and what this means for employees and shoppers.
Which Nordstrom stores are closing in august 2025?
Here are two Nordstrom department stores scheduled to close this month in the U.S.:
- Saint Louis Galleria in St. Louis, Missouri – closing August 24
- Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, California – closing August 26
These stores have been popular stops for shoppers, especially the Santa Monica location, which sits at the heart of the Third Street Promenade shopping district. Unfortunately, both locations will be closing within days of each other.

Why is Nordstrom closing stores in St. Louis and Santa Monica?
According to Nordstrom, the decision is as a result of business realities. A company spokesperson explained that keeping the Saint Louis Galleria location open would not have been profitable due to lease renewal costs.
In Santa Monica, the problem is tied to the larger struggles of the shopping district. The Third Street Promenade has faced challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic, with many stores seeing declining foot traffic.
Nordstrom addressed the closures by saying:
“We believe we’ll be best able to serve customers in each region by leveraging our surrounding stores and through our digital channels.”
This means that while the stores are closing, Nordstrom will continue to serve shoppers through nearby locations and its growing online platforms.
What stores will replace the closing Nordstrom locations?
So far, Nordstrom has confirmed only one replacement. The Saint Louis Galleria Nordstrom will be taken over by Dick’s House of Sports, according to local news outlet KTVI. As for the Santa Monica location, no replacement has been announced yet.

What will happen to Nordstrom employees at these stores?
One of the biggest concerns when a store closes is what happens to the people who work there. Nordstrom has said it is doing what it can to support employees through this change.
The company shared in a statement:
“Decisions like this are never easy, and we understand the impact they have on our team members. We’re committed to taking care of our employees through this transition, including supporting those who are interested in finding another role within Nordstrom.”
This means that employees may have the chance to transfer to other Nordstrom stores or take on different roles in the company.
How is Nordstrom performing as a company?
Even though two stores are closing, Nordstrom as a business is not shrinking. In fact, the company has shown strong sales results recently.
Here are some key numbers from Nordstrom’s fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024:
- Comparable sales rose 4.7% compared to the year before.
- Nordstrom department store sales were up 5.3% year over year.
- Nordstrom Rack sales increased 3.5% year over year.
Nordstrom has also been expanding its Nordstrom Rack business. The company has announced more than 20 new Rack store openings, with many set to open in 2025 and beyond.
Who owns Nordstrom now?
Another major development is that Nordstrom is no longer a publicly traded company. In May 2025, Nordstrom became private after a $6.25 billion deal. The Nordstrom family and Mexican retailer El Puerto de Liverpool purchased the company.
- The Nordstrom family controls 50.1% of the business.
- El Puerto de Liverpool owns the remaining shares.
Today, Nordstrom operates more than 350 stores across the U.S., including Nordstrom, Nordstrom Local, and Nordstrom Rack locations.
