Labor Day weekend is almost here, which means backyard barbecues, end-of-summer sales, and a well-deserved break for millions of American workers. But if you’re planning to stop by the bank, mail a package, or drop off a check on Monday, September 1, you’ll want to plan ahead — because most financial institutions and postal services will be taking the day off right along with you.
A quick history lesson: why we celebrate Labour Day
Labor Day isn’t just the unofficial end of summer. It’s a holiday dedicated to honouring American workers and their contributions to the nation’s prosperity.
The very first Labor Day took place on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, thanks to a push from labor activists who wanted a day set aside for hard-working Americans. By 1894, President Grover Cleveland had signed a law making the first Monday in September an official federal holiday.
So while you’re enjoying a day off, remember: this is about celebrating the people who build, create, and keep the country running — including the folks who usually help you at your bank branch.
Will banks be open?
If you need to make a deposit, withdraw cash, or speak with a banker in person, here’s the deal: most banks will be closed on Labor Day.
- Capital One, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, PNC, Truist, and JPMorgan Chase branches will not be open on September 1.
- Capital One Cafés are the exception — they will stay open if you just need a cup of coffee and a quick ATM run.
The good news? Online banking and mobile apps never take a holiday. You can still pay bills, transfer money, and check your balance without leaving your couch (or the hammock).
What about the post office?
The U.S. Postal Service is also giving its workers the day off. All post offices will be closed, and there will be no regular residential or business mail delivery on Labor Day.
The only exception is Priority Mail Express, which keeps going 365 days a year. So, if you absolutely have to send something urgent, you’re covered — though it’ll cost you.
Shipping services: UPS and FedEx hours
Need to send or receive a package? You’ll want to double-check your carrier:
- UPS: Pickup and delivery services won’t be running on Labor Day, and most UPS Store locations will be closed. However, UPS Express Critical, their emergency service, is available every day of the year if you have a shipment that just can’t wait.
- FedEx: Most pickup and delivery services will also pause for the holiday. FedEx Office locations will have modified hours, so call ahead to confirm. FedEx Custom Critical, their 24/7 service, will still be available for time-sensitive deliveries.
Plan ahead for September 1
If you’ve got errands that involve a teller, a package, or a piece of mail, your best bet is to take care of them before the long weekend starts.
So, enjoy the cookouts, soak in the last days of summer, and give your bank app a workout instead of your car keys. Your branch will be waiting for you bright and early on Tuesday, September 2.
