When a company like General Motors issues a recall, it usually means something big is going on. This time, it is affecting some of the most popular trucks and SUVs on American roads.
GM has recalled about 877,000 full-size pickups and SUVs worldwide—including roughly 598,000 in the U.S.—because of a serious engine problem tied to the 6.2-liter V-8 engine. That is a lot of vehicles, and if you drive one of these models, you might want to keep reading.
What GM trucks and SUVs are affected by this recall?
If you are wondering whether your vehicle is part of the recall, here are the models that GM has flagged:
- Cadillac Escalade (2021–2024)
- Cadillac Escalade ESV (2021–2024)
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2021–2024)
- Chevrolet Tahoe (2021–2024)
- Chevrolet Suburban (2021–2024)
- GMC Sierra 1500 (2021–2024)
- GMC Yukon (2021–2024)
- GMC Yukon XL (2021–2024)
But here is the catch—this recall only applies to these vehicles if they came with the 6.2-liter L87 V-8 engine. So if your ride has a different engine, you are probably in the clear.
What is wrong with the 6.2-liter V-8 engine?
The main issue comes down to the engine’s internal parts—specifically the crankshaft and connecting rods. These parts were reportedly damaged during manufacturing, which can lead to:
- Sudden loss of power while driving
- Engine failure, which can leave you stranded
- Long-term engine damage if not inspected or fixed
Some drivers have already experienced problems. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation earlier this year after receiving 39 complaints about engine issues in these vehicles.
How serious is the recall?
Pretty serious. GM has already ordered a stop-sale of all affected vehicles that are still sitting on dealership lots. That means dealers are not allowed to sell any of the impacted trucks or SUVs until they are checked and cleared.
A GM spokesperson said,
“GM will voluntarily recall certain 2021–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban; GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL; Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV models equipped with 6.2-liter L87 engines to resolve manufacturing issues affecting some engines. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible.”
What should you do if your vehicle is affected?
If you own one of these models with the 6.2-liter engine, you should:
- Wait for GM to contact you, or
- Call your local dealership to see if your vehicle is under recall
When you bring it in, here is what dealers will do:
- Inspect the engine for internal damage
- If everything looks fine, they will:
- Replace the oil filter and oil cap
- Use a thicker 0W-40 viscosity oil
- Replace the oil filter and oil cap
- If the engine does not pass inspection, they will:
- Repair or replace the engine at no cost to you
- Repair or replace the engine at no cost to you
Can you keep driving your truck or SUV?
You can, but it is not something you want to put off. If your vehicle is showing warning signs—like strange noises from the engine, loss of power, or dashboard alerts—it is better to stop driving and get it checked immediately. Driving with a damaged engine could leave you in a tough spot or cause even worse problems down the road.
