The IRS has just set a key date for an estimated million Americans who have not claimed the $1,400 stimulus checks that stem from the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC). The remaining million-odd people must file their 2021 tax returns by April 15, 2025, in order to get such payments. After the deadline date, the payments will not be claimed until at least 2026.
Importance of the $1,400 Stimulus Checks
The $1,400 stimulus check was enacted under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to offer monetary relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. The bulk of eligible Americans received their payments automatically, while some missed out due to filing mistakes, ignorance about the program, or confusion over requirements. The IRS estimates that roughly $2.4 billion in payments remain unclaimed, and this is the last chance to collect these payments before they expire.
Who gets the payment?
The IRS has identified around 1 million taxpayers with eligible stimulus checks. Those eligible for payments are required to have a valid Social Security number, and not be claimed as a dependent by anyone else on a tax return in 2021. Other than that, any taxpayer, including low-income groups, with or without income for the said year, is eligible for payment by filing a tax return.
Many thought they did not have any stimulus payments because they also thought they did not need to file any taxes. This applied particularly to those whose only income was Social Security benefits or other non-taxable income. However, now the IRS has confirmed that they are qualified and need to file a 2021 return before April 15.
How to claim the payment
Taxpayers who haven’t yet received their $1,400 stimulus check can claim it by filing a 2021 tax return and applying for the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC). The IRS has provided free filing options for eligible individuals through its website, ensuring that those who qualify can submit their claims without additional costs.
For taxpayers who are unsure of their eligibility or need assistance, Taxpayer Assistance Centers are available to provide guidance. Additionally, taxpayers who file for the RRC may also qualify for other financial benefits, such as the Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Tax Credit, which could result in a larger refund.
What happens after the deadline?
Once the April 15, 2025 deadline passes, any remaining unclaimed payments will no longer be available. This means individuals who fail to act in time could permanently miss out on the financial relief offered by the government.
Experts warn that for many struggling Americans, this could be a missed opportunity for much-needed financial support, especially as the cost of living remains high. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel emphasized that the agency is making every effort to ensure eligible taxpayers claim their payments before it’s too late.
