If you get Social Security benefits, then you know that every January the Social Security Administration (SSA) mails out a tax form. For most people, this is called Form SSA-1099. If you are a noncitizen who received or repaid benefits last year, you get Form SSA-1042S instead.
These forms show the total amount of benefits you received and how much income you need to report to the IRS on your tax return. But what happens if you lose it, or it never arrives in your mailbox? The good news is that getting a replacement is simple, and you have more than one option.
What is the difference between form SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S?
It helps to know which form you need.
- Form SSA-1099: Sent to U.S. citizens and legal residents who received Social Security benefits.
- Form SSA-1042S: Sent to noncitizens who received or repaid benefits.
Keep in mind that these forms are not created for people who only receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI). If you get SSI, you will not get an SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S at all.
