Costco is preparing to open its largest Texas store—a 180,000-square-foot Midland warehouse. The store opening in July will be the sole Costco within 100 miles of the West Texas city and will serve not only as a store for Midland residents but also for shoppers across the Permian Basin region as a whole.

Famous for bulk foods, discounts, and a legendary food court, Costco’s presence in Midland is a key retail win for the city. With its closest store more than 100 miles away in Lubbock to date, the new store potentially can draw buyers from across all of West Texas.

Breaking ground and fast-tracking construction

Costco formally broke ground on the Midland site on Dec. 10, 2024. Midland Mayor Lori Blong praised the company for moving quickly to secure permits and break ground well ahead of schedule. Originally, the city’s incentive agreement with Costco required the store to open in August of 2026. Instead, the company will open more than a year ahead of that.

“Earlier, some time around 2019-2020, we were in talks with Costco,” Mayor Blong explained. “But the pandemic and economic shifts put our plans on hold. We thought it was never going to happen. But with determination and teamwork, we made it happen.”

Costco’s expansion beyond Texas

The Midland store is only one of several new locations in the works by the retail giant. On Costco’s “Coming Soon” website, three overseas stores are also in the works:

  • Pyeongtaek, South Korea – Opening June 2025
  • Malmo, Sweden – Opening July 2025
  • Midland, Texas – Opening July 2025

These additions are part of the company’s broader global expansion strategy.

Recent openings in the U.S. and abroad

Costco has been actively growing its footprint in 2025. In March, the company opened several U.S. locations, including:

  • Brentwood, California
  • Highland, California
  • Sharon, Massachusetts
  • Genesee County, Michigan
  • Prosper, Texas
  • Weatherford, Texas

In April, new stores launched internationally in:

  • Stuart, Florida
  • Ardeer, Australia
  • Minami Alps, Japan

Costco CEO Ron Vachris confirmed the company’s aggressive growth plan for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends August 31.

Texas: A critical market for Costco

Texas remains one of the strongest markets for Costco in the U.S., with 42 warehouse stores statewide. Nationally, Costco operates 627 U.S. stores and more than 800 globally.

The opening of the Midland store further cements Costco’s commitment to bringing its signature brand of savings and convenience to underserved communities. West Texans’ days of having to drive hours to El Paso, Fort Worth, or Lubbock will give way to a giant, state-of-the-art Costco in their backyard.

A new era for consumers in West Texas

With construction nearing completion, anticipation builds. The Midland Costco will be a regional shopping mecca, offering everything from electronics and groceries to tire services and bargain lunches—including the iconic $1.50 hot dog-and-soda deal.
