There could be money for you from the class action lawsuit against Block, Inc. and Cash App Investing, LLC-but only if you act within the deadline. If you are a Cash App user and have been harmed by certain data compromises or unauthorized transactions, you may be entitled to receive up to $2,500 cash as part of the proposed settlement.

Here’s all the information you need to file for your share.

Why is there a settlement?

The violation in this case is that the companies allegedly acted negligently toward the protection of user data and were negligent concerning unauthorized transactions. Specifically, the case is about

  • A data breach disclosed by Cash App Investing in April 2022
  • A data breach disclosed by Block in October 2023
  • Alleged fraudulent withdrawals or transfers from users’ accounts and improper resolution of related complaints

Block and Cash App Investing deny any wrongdoing but have agreed to a settlement to resolve the case.

Who qualifies for a payment?

Should you have used Cash App or Cash App Investing and suffered from any of the security-related incidents or unauthorized transactions, you could be eligible for a cash payment. The amount you could receive would depend on your individual losses and could be as high as $2,500, including:

  • Out-of-pocket expenses
  • Lost time spent resolving issues
  • Transaction losses

Filing a claim

A valid claim form must be submitted to receive payment. The deadline for filing is November 18, 2024. You can complete the form online or by mail. You will provide information on the losses you have suffered concerning the account activity covered by the lawsuit.

What are my other options?

If you don’t want to participate in the settlement, you can choose from the following:

  • Exclude yourself (“opt out”) by November 18, 2024, which allows you to file your own lawsuit later but disqualifies you from receiving any settlement payment.
  • Object to the settlement if you disagree with the terms. Your written objection must be submitted by November 18, 2024. You can also attend the Final Approval Hearing on January 13, 2025, at 9:30 AM PST.
  • Do nothing. You’ll stay part of the class, but you won’t receive any payment and you’ll give up the right to sue over the same issues.

Hearing on final approval

On January 13, 2025, the court will hold a hearing on whether to approve the settlement. If it goes through, payment will not be disbursed until all objections and appeals (if any) are settled.

Don’t miss out on the deadline

If you think you qualify, don’t wait. Go to the official settlement website or contact the administrator in order to file your claim before November 18, 2024. This could be your only opportunity to recover any losses pertaining to data security or account issues with Cash App.
