Hello, let me tell you a short tale—one you’ll likely want to hear if you have sausage in your refrigerator.
So imagine this: you come home from the grocery store, shove some chicken sausages in your freezer, and think you’ve got yourself a good, speedy dinner planned. Then, a couple of days later, you discover that those same sausages can have tiny pieces of white plastic inside. Yes, plastic. That’s what’s happening with a fresh recall by Kayem Foods.
What happened?
On July 17, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that Kayem Foods Inc. is recalling over 24,000 pounds of its ready-to-eat chicken sausage. This came after two people found bits of hard plastic in their sausages and complained to the company.
Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the recall is large, and the USDA worries that some of these sausages could still be sitting in people’s fridges or freezers.
Which sausages are recalled?
Right on. The recalled sausages are:
- Brand: Al Fresco (manufactured by Kayem Foods)
- Product Name: All Natural Chicken Sausage Sweet Apple with Vermont-Made Syrup
- Package Size: 11-ounce package (containing 4 sausages therein)
- Lot Code: 179
- Use or Freeze By Date: October 1, 2025 (you can look at it on the back)
- Establishment Number: P-7839 (within the USDA mark of inspection)
If you already have this sausage in your fridge or freezer, do not eat it. Dispose of it or return it to the store.
What to do if you have it?
If the sausage in your household is like the one described above, you have two things you can be sure of:
1. Dispose of it safely, see that no one in your home prepares or eats it.
2. Take it back to the store where you bought it and ask for a refund.
Also, to play it safe, clean any containers, shelves, or surfaces that came into contact with the sausage—hot, soapy water is wonderful.

Even though it’s just a few cases so far, chewing on a hard plastic item will hurt your teeth, your mouth, or worse if swallowed. That’s why FSIS is taking it seriously—and you should too.

One last thing…
It’s a small recall, perhaps, but 24,173 pounds of sausage is significant. And these sausages were distributed all over the entire United States, so if you live in California, Texas, New York, or somewhere in between, you might have it.
