If you’ve purchased cucumbers or packaged salsas in the past few weeks, it’s time to head into the fridge. A persistent salmonella outbreak has sparked a series of recalls—this one tied to ready-to-eat fresh produce imported into many states. You might not receive a legal notice in your email, but the risk is there, and here’s what’s going on.
The source of the outbreak: Contaminated cucumbers
TGD Cuts, LLC, of Jessup, Maryland, just issued a voluntary recall of multiple products of salsa and cucumber. Why? Because they utilized Bedner Growers Inc. cucumbers from Boynton Beach, Florida, the same grower that has been implicated in an ongoing salmonella outbreak.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the products were sold to retailers and foodservice operations in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and North Carolina. The recalled products had use-by dates between May 20 and May 28, 2025. So these likely are off the shelves by now, but if you froze any or are unsure, it is a good idea to double-check.
No Illnesses from these products—yet
The silver lining: To our knowledge, no illness has been directly traced to the TGD Cuts products so far. Nevertheless, the outbreak has already resulted in several people getting sick through other tainted foods, so it’s always better safe than sorry.
This isn’t just about one company
The cucumber recall is not new. It began long ago on May 19, when direct-to-consumer cucumbers at Bednar’s Farm Fresh Market were brought to the attention of the CDC and FDA. Since then, major retailers like Walmart, Kroger, Harris Teeter, and even Target have begun recalls of repackaged cucumbers—some packaged individually, others packaged in salad kits or veggie trays.
Target recalled cucumber two-packs and prepared foods using the contaminated produce on May 30.

What to know about Salmonella symptoms
Salmonella infects about 1.35 million Americans every year, landing thousands of them in the hospital. The symptoms are fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, typically developing 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. In severe cases, dehydration, urine or stool, and, in rare cases, death can occur.
If you get sick after eating any of the following items, call your doctor right away.
Final thought: Be safe, be aware
Food recalls might be daunting, but the trick is being aware. This cucumber outbreak continues, and more recalls are in store. Always check your produce, especially if it’s pre-sliced or ready-to-eat, and unsure, discard it.
You can also always go and look for the latest details on the FDA or CDC websites, and I’ll post here as things develop.
