Mondelēz Global LLC initiated a voluntary recall of four pack sizes of RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches because of a hazardous labeling flaw that could expose consumers with peanut allergies to the risk of life-threatening conditions. The recall, initiated on July 8, 2025, involves products shipped throughout all US states nationwide.

The recall facts: What products are involved

The recall affects individually packaged cartons that may be mislabeled as “Cheese variety” when they have peanut butter in them. The external cartons are properly labeled and include proper allergen warning with “contains peanuts,” but the mislabeled individual packages within pose a serious danger to individuals who have a peanut allergy.

The recall involves four sizes of carts:

  • 8-pack RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches
  • 20-count RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches
  • 40-count RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches

Root cause of the recall

The cause of the mislabeling mistake was faulty packing rolls of film for unit packaged foods with peanut butter. This supplier mistake led to the mislabeling of some peanut butter sandwich packages as cheese variety, presenting an undeclared allergen hazard.

The FDA advises consumers with peanut hypersensitivity or allergy to risk life-threatening or serious allergic reactions from eating these foods that are mislabeled. The risk is that the consumer eats peanut butter foods thinking they are eating cheese-flavored crackers.

Symptoms of peanut allergic reactions

Health authorities say symptoms may include:

  • Hives and swelling
  • Itching and tingle in or around the mouth and throat
  • Runny nose and breathing problems
  • Gastrointestinal disease, such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting
  • Wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath

There have been no reported illnesses or injuries to date associated with this recall. Consumers are still requested to:

  • Inspect their pantries for the involved products with the same UPC codes and dates
